Windows 10: Moving Digital License to Another Device

so currently i'm in the process of trying to activate my Windows 10 Pro on my new PC. I have an activated Windows 10 on my laptop and I want to move it to my PC windows is retail, obtained from my uni, but when I input the product key from laptop into PC, it gave error 0x80041023, and I cant find that error code on the help.

Weird thing is that on my Microsoft account, I can see 2 devices, the laptop and the PC. But when I went to settings > activation > troubleshoot > "I changed hardware on this device recently", I can only see my laptop on the device list. Please help...

Thats how licensing works with Windows 10, the digital license is attached to your Microsoft Account and makes it easy to reactivate Windows 10 in the event you reinstall it.

Hi Mark -

What is the Status and Edition listed at Settings > Update & Security > Activation, at the top? If it's a Digital License then you can move it without needing the Product Key by first making sure it's linked to your MS Account by signing in with that account,
then on the new hardware sign in with the same MS account and run the Activation Troubleshooter to move the license to it.

Once a Digital License is issued the key is no longer needed except in rare circumstances.

Digital license or Digital entitlement can be obtained when a Windows device has been upgraded from an old version to the latest one. If you have an old Windows 7 device that was upgraded to Windows 10, the product key will be converted to a Digital license
which is stored on our Activation servers. Digital license activation will not prompt for a product key during installation.

Here are some scenarios that will require a Digital license activation:

• Upgrading to Windows 10 for free from an eligible device running a genuine copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
• Buying genuine Windows 10 from the Microsoft Store and successfully activated Windows 10.
• Buying a Windows 10 Pro upgrade from the Microsoft Store and successfully activated Windows 10.
• Being a Windows Insider and upgrading to the newest Windows 10 Insider Preview build on an eligible device that was running an activated earlier version of Windows and Windows 10 Preview.
