  1. Moving files and folders from source to destination just copy and not move the items

I am trying to move some folders and files from the source to the destination folder on the same drive.First, I tried dragging-n-dropping, but I found that while the folders and files were copied to the destination folder, they were still in the source folder. Next, I tried with Cut and Past, but again, the folders and files were copied to the destination folder but were also in the source folder.I manually deleted source folders and files, but how can I correct the issue so the cut and paste will work as expected next time?

    :)

  2. Move a file into a folder with a non-inherited ACL rule, the file will not inherit ACL from parent, why?

    This is by design.

"Moving" a folder means that you move the whole structure from the source folder to the destination folder, complete with its permission settings. The individual files are not touched. It's like sending a parcel by post: The post office gets no access to
    the parcel's contents.

"Copying" a folder means that you copy each file to the destination folder. During the copy process it acquires the permission settings of the destination folder. It's like being screen at the airport: Security will examine each item in your bag and discard
    items deemed dangerous.

You must therefore do the move in two steps: First "copy", then "delete".

  3. moving folders

    Hi gba,

To move the file/folder to the destination, press and hold the Shift key when dragging and dropping the item.

Alternately, right-click on the folder and choose "Cut". Go to the destination folder and click "Paste". It's as safe as the other methods (drag/drop or "Move to") because Windows doesn't delete the source unless and until it knows that it has successfully copied the item to the destination.

And you can add the "Move to" option to the context menu if you want.

For special folders or shell folders like Music, Videos, Pictures, etc, you can use the Location tab in folder properties to relocate the folder. Cut and Paste works perfectly fine, too.

  4. Moving files and folders from source to destination just copy and not move the items

Why doesn't File Explorer copy the files that are not in conflict in the destination folder?

    Hi Abdu,

To get better clarity on the issue, kindly answer the questions below:

    • Are you getting any error messages upon moving the files?
    • Have you tried moving the files manually to the destination folder?
    • What is the file type that you are trying to move?
    • Is the destination folder on a local storage (installed on the PC) or is it on an external drive.
We look forward to your response.
