Moving from W10 to W11 using external hard drive

I am trying to move my data, settings, etc., from my old Windows 10 to new Windows 11 laptop. I've backed it all up on an external hard drive. Can you tell me how to import it to the new machine please? A reply to a similar question from June 24 said to go to Control Panel > System and Security > Backup and Restore > Restore my Files. However, when I tunnel down to Backup and Restore, this is noted as Windows 7 and none of the potential avenues from System and Security seem right. I've spent days wrestling with various aspects of this. Can anyone help please an

    External Hard Drive

    Hi John,

We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

    • Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
    • Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.
The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

Let us know if you need further help.

  3. trouble trying to move files from old w10 pc to new w11 pc

I think I'm on the right track, but when I try to access w10 pc from the new one, it wants me to enter "credentials".

On the old w10 pc, when I look for credentials, I find that I have no windows credentials.

Am I in the right place?

Is there an easier way to move files?

My Plan B is to copy all my old w10 files to an external drive and then suck them on to the new w11 pc.

But that involves one extra step, which will make this take a lot longer.

    Help!

    External hard drive not recognised

Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.
