Windows 10: Moving or deleting takes long -- dialog shows 99% for a couple seconds

This happened recently starting a few days ago, and I have no clue what could have caused this.

When I move or delete a file, it will show a dialog like this:

It turns 100% after a couple seconds and the move/delete is done. This happens even for very small files. This has never happened before, and I don't know what could have cause this. It even happens in Safe Mode.

EDIT 1: I found that if I create a new user on the system, the issues don't happen there! The issue remains on my main account...

EDIT 2: Renaming/moving/deleting causes a huge memory spike (from explorer.exe or runtimebroker.exe or settingsynchost.exe). Is this normal? See attached.





Also, the lag does NOT happen when I rename/move/delete a file within a dialog. For example, when I was uploading the above screenshot, I deleted and renamed a file through the pop-up, and there was no issue (reproducible).

Things I've tried to remedy this:
- Update Windows
- Disable services
- Disable indexing
- Uninstall recently updated or installed software (Core Temp)
- Go into Safe Mode
- Run sfc/ scannow
- Run antivirus
- Use Nirsoft ShellMenuNew to disable context options (as suggested by others elsewhere)

I'd rather not do a reinstall because I have large programs I want to keep installed like games, and I'm hoping there's a way to just get rid of the dialog box every time because it is really annoying.

Any other ideas I can try? Thank you!

Moving files from one directory to another extremely slow in Windows 10

In Windows 10, when I try to move a large number of files from one folder to another on my C drive, it takes a long time. The file count goes up by about 20 or 30 files at a time. As the number of files moved approaches the number in the dialog, bumps
the number by another 20 or 30. Altogether it takes minutes to move the files. If I move the files to my NAS, it takes 20 seconds. When the computer was Windows 7, moves were pretty much instantaneous.

 

Laptop takes too long to sleep

Recently my laptop has been taking too long to go to sleep, it was working fine a couple days ago taking only a couple of seconds. Waking it from sleep mode takes less than a couple seconds, does anyone know what's going on?

My laptop is an msi ms-1492 from pcspecalist

This has been a problem ever since Windows 7 and before. See LONG thread HERE. One ting i have found that seems to indicate that it should be possible to get faster results is that when I i use the UtraSearch Utility to locate files. Once it finds them, if i click Delete they instantly disappear. UltraSearch uses a link to the NTFS MFT and possibly this is where the issue lies.

In the links above,one earlier suggesting was to disable the option for archiving under file attributes but doing this takes longer than the few extra seconds of wait time.

At this point, I'm considering a reinstall and maybe getting some new RAM...

 

I doubt RAM will help from your posted comments. I think I would consider cloning the "slow" profile into the new one before spending money on RAM. From your description you have pretty much narrowed it down to something related to your specific user Profile. You could try adding a few of your games and such to the new profile to see if/when the problems reappear.

If it doesn't, then you fixed it for free. If it does, it is software related and removing the offending app will probably help more than additional RAM.

I have seen something very much like what you described on my own system with 32 GB RAM and fast SSD. It isn't always an issue but when it occurs, it is extremely annoying and I think (at least in my case) it is related to the way Windows keeps track of file status. In a normal delete it has to double check every byte to be sure it has been cleared for re-indexing into the MFT as an 'available' location rather than in use.

This was why I mentioned that I can see the speed differences when using different ways to delete the same files. Like the difference between a "quick format" and a full format. Your situation may be different though. Good luck with it. I would love to know what you find that fixes it.

I've been investigating this issue further and noted two things:

- I can do something called an in-place upgrade that apparently doesn't affect any of my installed programs. It sounds like it's similar to migrating from Windows 8.1 to 10.
- My RAM is pretty messed up. I thought of doing a MemTest because I had gotten some BSODs lately (two different error codes, one of which was MEMORY_MANAGEMENT). Thought it might reveal some clues. See results below...





Questions:
1. I'm assuming this is cause for concern, putting aside the actual issue of this topic? As you said, I'm not sure if replacing RAM would fix the issue (seems to be an OS issue since it doesn't happen on my main account).

2. Is there a way I can tell which one or both of my two RAM is/are faulty? I think I'd have to test each one separately...

EDIT: According to my research, it looks like next steps are to do one stick at a time in each slot (slot may also be faulty)...

3. Do you know whether an in-place upgrade would keep my installed programs registered to Windows (so I don't have to reinstall and reconfigure each)? Seems like the best option at this point.
