Moving Photos from Phone to Desktop, File Size Becomes Gigantic

Hello, asking for a friend here.

My friend moved a big amount of photos from his phone to a folder in his desktop. Since there were a lot, it took him around 30 minutes to get the job done, but it was finally completed. However, each photo file becomes gigantic -- each JPEG was 16 GB and its size in disk was 14 GB, making the folder size 40 TB+.

Each photo has a diagonal arrow symbol on its top right -- meaning Windows seems to regard them as compressed files, if I'm not mistaken. However, they cannot be opened. Photo Viewer says it does not support that format while the file extension is .jpg.

Could you please tell me what has gone wrong and what we could do to recover the files? We've tried looking it up online but we found no help. He has also tried recovering the photos with Stellar Repair, but it says the photo is already 100%.

I know he should've copied and deleted instead of cutting, but the damage has been done and there's nothing else we could do. The photos has been removed from his phone. Also, since the backup folder is huge, he can't do anything about it -- he can neither delete or move it anywhere else now.

I'm attaching some screenshots below. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Change the size of the photo displayed on the lock screen

Since we installed Windows 10 on our desktop the lock screen appears and the photo is gigantic. How do I remove the lock screen or can the size of the photo on the lock screen be made smaller?

    Thanks, all.

    Photo's JPG size reduction

    Many thanks DaveM121

WOW! I just learned something new and important for editing my photos.

You provided me with excellent quick steps to re-size the photo.

To play it safe, I made a copy of the original photo and performed your editing steps on the copied photo. I assume that by keeping the original photo . . . the higher MBs photo, I will be able to have large prints made in high resolution.

To e-mail photos for viewing only, the re-sized photo is the best way.

Regarding your first possible suggestion of an E-mail app that provides an option to automatically reduce the JPG size, my e-mail app/program is Microsoft Outlook 2016. If it's okay with you, I'd appreciate your step-by-step procedure to re-size photos.

    Thanks again,

    Barry G
