Windows 10: MS MCT ISO 22621.382, fails to upgrade from 22000.1042

On 9/23/2022 I tried upgrading from 22000.1042 with ISO 22621.382 and got the message on the bottom screenshot.What is weird is that the same exact process worked fine on Sept 21st. 2022. I already have a working backup copy of the system that was upgraded on Sept 21st. What is changed in the last 2 days? What is it complaining about? There is no explanation showing on the learn more link.Windows 11, version 22H2 known issues and notifications Microsoft LearnThis is a Dell XPS 8940.

3 PC's: Free upgrade using ISO?


I'd like to get definitive answers, with links to MS documentation:

1. Is the ONLY way to get the free upgrade either by GWX or MCT"Upgrade this PC"?
2. The ISO produced by MCT"Create media" option cannot be used for the initial free upgrade. True or false? If false, please provide link.
3. The ISO produced by MCT is version-specific: Home OR Pro, not both, Full OR "N", not both. True or false? links?

My three machines are Ult N, Pro N, and "8.1 with Bing", all x64.

mct (UPGRADE) FAILS SECOND BOOT

Using MCT tool downloaded today. Selected upgrade, keep files, settings and apps. At ready to install screen; confirmed correctly: win 10 pro, keep personal files and apps. Selected INSTALL

FAILED: SECOND_BOOT error during PRE 00BE OR PRE OOBE.

Should I have disabled my anti virus(NORTON). Should I disconnedt my wifi adapter before selecting INSTALL? Any other help would be appreciated. I don't undrstand the error code above or the suggestion select: "NO EXECUTE PERMISSION" in BIOS.

REASON FOR DOING THIS, MULTIPLE STOP CODE ERRORS over past 6 weeks, mostlly code 41(68)

 

mct (UPGRADE) FAILS SECOND BOOT

Hi Andrae, Here are the results of my troubleshooting efforts including data from some efforts done before my original POST. Due to my poor memory and notes the exact sequence of events is only approximately correct.

This is the most recent info.

2-24-18 PC was put to sleep using keyboard button the previous evening. This day used KBD "Wake" button. PC restarted ok and after about 20 seconds, PS restarted, POST completed and logged in. Got error message: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON PAGE AREA. restarted
PC and tried to run NORTON SECURITY full system scan, About 5 minutes later PC restarted and at sign in page; signed in and
about 26 seconds got error message: IRQL_NOT_LESS OR EQUAL. Restarted and signed in OK. Then got this message: : Preferences.read prefs
err=2 what =XMLE EXCEPTION WHERE = 4
NAME=PREFERENCE then got the error message:IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Then on the BIOS screen page this message appeared: "please wait" followed by: RECOVERY
Looks like windows did not load correctly. Select advanced repair options: Selected ADVANCE REPAIR OPTIONS>TROUBLESHOOT>ADVANCED
OPTONS> STARTUP REPAIR>….Startup repair couldn't repair your PC. Rebooted>loggedin> Got the "preferences notice again" listed above again >OK> got error message: PAGE_FAILED_IN_NON_PAGE_AREA.

At this point I decided to stop trying to troubleshoot, shut PD down and will wait to hear from you. Previous troubleshooting results are described below. After that are some questions

MY SYSTEM INFORMATION:
WIN 10 PRO 64B; FALL CREATORS UPDAATE v1709 INSTALLED OK 12.07.17

MOBO:ASUS MAXIMUS VIII HERO ALPHA UEFI BIOS 32GB RAM
C: DRIVE IS INTEL NVMe AIC 750 SERIES, 800GB/ 174 GB USED. This system is my third DYI build and has been operating trouble free since2.22.16. No garbage programs or apps. All WIN10 updates installed prior creating/use MCT tool

Any help or suggestions you can provide will be much appreciated.
I have a few additional questions that I would also like to ask, as I am probably beyond my capabilities to solve these issues above.

Q1: Since the install again of V1709 (keep apps and files/data) failed on second boot is it worth trying again or am I risking creating more problems. When the second boot failed the notice also said the PC would be restored to the same
state as before the attempted reinstall. Would it do that if I tried again.

Q2:With all of the data above do you think I could successfully reimage my computer with an existing ISO made 12.11.17 just after I did the V1709 upgrade hoping that the rimaging would not have all these problems. I don't recall any restarts during
past reimaging efforts on other PC's. If I successfully reimaged my PC then I was thinking
that if there were any lingering problems from that time frame/that existed;
I could then use the MCT tool route to do a reinstall of win10(keep apps and files) and hoping it would succeed; thus fixing any lingering problems. My notes show that some issues might have existed prior to the v1709 upgrade but there were very few.
My choice to do a reimaging first then the MCT tool is based on the concern that if I reinstall Win10 using the MCT tool and it fails and something happens then I am only left with a "clean reinstall" then the system will lose the link to the saved ISO's I
have on non-C: drive locations. What are your thoughts. What would you recommend

Q3: If there is no reasonable hope of solving all these issues using the steps above then can I use the MCT
tool and do a clean install (perhaps saving files) using the MCT tool route and does the win10 product key still exist in the system so I won't have a problem with authentication?
