I find that there is a warning:

These downloads cannot be used to update Windows 10 PCs to the November update (Version 1511).

From the Microsoft Page: Windows 10
Will we upgrade by using this tool? Thanks.

I think Microsoft has been getting really soft lately. I really think they are trying to beat out Apple and the Macintosh OS.

  9. I take that timeframe seriously for my work computers or even longer.
I likely won't go with the free upgrade for those machines.
Will continue to monitor the 10 developments with a test machine...

  10. I'm not sure about this. The new products look great! but the sales will told us who is the real winner in the race.
I love new Surface Pro, Surfacebook and Lumia 950 but I'm afraid of the sales...

I only meant it in the sense of "dwelt amongst us" rather than "his divine presence", but if the cap fits...

My guess? They forgot to lockout all those bogus/pirated Windows 7 and 8 keys and activation hacks floating around on the Internet. The only way to mitigate the problem is by forcing everyone back through the upgrade-from-an-existing-and-activated Windows process.

I manage around 40 windows PCs for charity. I upgraded them all from Win 7 and XP to Win 8.1 a good few months back and had virtually no problems with 8.1. It is fast to boot and use and with very few obvious bugs for office use. I've now upgraded many to 10240 and 10586 including my own Win 7 PC. On my own PC I'm already finding various issues that I can't pin down. These include IE not remembering login passwords or web-links to it. Internet page downloads appear to have slowed. McAfee doesn't update properly and as for the awful Edge browser; at least Firefox is OK. Win 8.1 appeared solid but Win 10 worries me. Ref Linux, I managed a team of embedded Linux engineers and the constant problem was everyone had a different build version to match different build add-ins. We had an Apache mail server that crashed due to the usual problem of spaghetti scripting that no one had documented. Microsoft might limit you to tick boxes but the end result is more manageable.

  15. The irony is that, on my nearly 5 year old Acer laptop (first gen Core i5 "Arrandale"), Windows 10 runs like an absolute champ. Fast, responsive and rock stable (so far), with every device supported (including an ancient Intel HD Graphics 3000 video adapter). Swapped out the wifi card for a newer one from a salvaged Dell, slapped in a 7200RPM disk and bumped the RAM to 8GB and the machine absolutely sings under the new Windows.

However, on my much "newer" HP Envy x2 (Atom z2760 - circa Windows 8 debut), Windows 10 runs like a dog and there still isn't a compatible video driver (current Windows 8.1 version is buggy as hell). I'm very tempted to go back to Windows 8.1 on that device since it always ran smoothly and I miss the much more intuitive swipe-gestures, especially in "Modern" IE (Edge sucks on a tablet, IMHO).

Note: I had a Surface 3 for a while (met with an unfortunate accident and is now in pieces), and even that "should be almost guaranteed to work well" device was a bit twitchy under Windows 10 (weird issues with the Type Cover "resetting" all the time).

So, my experience has been that Windows 10 works best on PCs that are well behind the hardware evolution curve - sort of like Linux! *Smile
