About the marketshare, these numbers have been climbing for OSX. And no doubt, as a tech guy, at conferences and such you see a ton of glowing apples.

Perhaps they didn't foresee the popularity of the MCT downloads, and only in the face of the actual updates did they decide they wanted more Windows Update installs rather than MCT installs.

Regardless, this is an entirely new distribution process they're using, they won't have past experience to draw planning data from..

Windows update installs overwrite existing installs to a greater or lesser extent. OK

Clean installs can be done side by side with existing OSs still remaining - it may not be legitimate, but it is possible. NOT OK

Clean installs on virgin hardware using product keys from existing systems can also be done side by side. NOT OK

  9. This MCT won't run on *this PC * to download ISO in the windows Insider volume maybe I'll try it later on the 7 x64 licenced upgrade 10586.3 NTFS volume and see what happens . I got this error code just now . Error code : 0x800704DD-090016

I'm thinking it's looking for a regular licence digital entitlement or product key outside of a Windows Insider volume .

    That is not quite correct.

Retail version of windows 7 or 8.x can be transferred to another computer if removed from the original computer.
We are still not sure if you can transfer a retail version of 10 to another computer there is a huge debate on this.

There is also another debate on whether the 10 free upgrade from a retail windows 7 or 8.x version can be transferred or has to remain on that system.

I do know oems/oem slp has to remain on the system it was installed on. If system was upgraded to windows 10, windows 10 can't be transferred to another computer

This is interesting isn't it, if the windows as a service model is correct and that all future 'window's service' will in effect be evolutions of windows 10 the if retail is transferable, will I ever have to buy a new version of windows ?
In 20 years will I just be able to install the latest evolution of windows and then claim I can use it because I originally updated from a retail version of windows 7/8/8.1 ?
I could always buy a computer with no OS installed (I tend to buy from scan so this is an option), at some point they will have to define a new edition of windows.. at least that's what logic tells me.

Yes you can, same as before but with genuine windows 10 keys - not the upgrade generic license..

Doesn't work unless you call them up in which case (in my experience) they log on to your PC and change the generic key for a retail 10 one which is then transferrable.

Annoyingly after the recent 10586 update all my VMs which were activated due to having been running previous insider builds became unactivated with error "No digital entitlement exists". Was good while it lasted...

"RETAIL ... 7 and 8 can be transferred... if removed..." No dispute here, but not relevant to MCT and ISO versions of Windows 10 setup, surely?

"We... are not sure... you can transfer retail Windows 10..." I am sure that it is possible, having tested it out.

A Windows 7 starter key from a (64-bit) dead netbook installed and activated 10565 home from a core ISO to a 32 bit machine that only had XP and Windows 8.1 enterprise trial installed before.

    Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10565 - Page 24 - Windows 10 Forums

see also #245 and #247in the same thread.

The logic here is that the netbook could have had its OEM-SLP Windows 7 starter installation upgraded to RETAIL Windows 10 by a core ISO I had, then the netbook died, instead of being long dead.

I would have every right to use the COA to reinstall the Core Windows 10 on another machine as per the EULA. If it had not auto activated, I could have phoned Microsoft for activation.

Activation by product key is the same for 1511 as for build 10565.

"...oems/oem slp has to remain on the system it was installed on." If system was upgraded to windows 10, windows 10 can't be transferred to another computer... Just look at the Windows 10 EULA on that PC, and then run slmgr -dlv - You will see that the OEM-SLP licence has been transformed into a Retail Channel license. You can use your COA on your replacement machine Windows 10 installation.

Also, there is no way Microsoft can know if you use your COA key and keep your OEM-SLP machine upgrade running. Not legit but possible.

I have also clean installed and activated Windows 10 Pro with a once used but now unused Windows 8 MCE free upgrade key. I stopped using MCE when I upgraded to Windows 8.1 still in occasional use, soon to be removed.

Whatever the debate, the current install media allow illegitimate activation of Windows 10 systems, and I fully understand why Microsoft wants to limit their availability.

Thanks- could be useful if an in place repair install is needed... long-winded otherwise.

  15. I was told, in no uncertain terms, by some Microsoft higher ups, that this was not the reason it was pulled. I actually got a very negative response for even suggesting it. Almost hostile response actually. It wasn't a very pleasant experience let me tell you. I can't say anymore than that as it was a private network subject to the NDA. *Sad
