Windows 10: MS SQL server application installation failed, error code:-2054422498

I had already check the drive I am installing MS SQL server to, it's not compressed. I also double check the folder, it's also uncompressed. I uncompressed the entire drive again just to be sure. And the installer still says the directory is compressed and cannot install. I am just generally confused, I mean it's not like the installer could be wrong, but I checked everywhere and it all showed uncompressed. I had already tried accessing through the cmd prompt and used the following command:>compact /u c:\program filesreturns:0 files within the 2 directories had been uncompressed.I tried ins

windows 10 update trying to install fix for sql server 2005 KB960089. But SQL server 2005 not installed.

Sql server 2005 was removed before the upgrade to windows 10.

It is not in any program list that can be selected for removal.

Now it keeps trying to install the fix over and over. Error codes go by so fast that I can not see them,. and are not in any history .....

I ran into the same issue on SQL Server 2014 update KB3070446. Tried running it through windows update, ran the usual fixes of the Windows Update troubleshooter, fixing .NET, rebooting, and some more rebooting.

In a quest for a more detailed error message, I downloaded the KB I needed to install manually from Microsoft's website. After that failed (with a different error code), I clicked on the log link on the failed installation screen.
According to the log, SQL server cannot be installed on a compressed target. On my system, that was "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server" and "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL server" (found in iterative failures of the installer). My C drive is a
moderatly small SSD, so I have it compressed to save space.

To solve the issue, I had to disable compression on the MS SQL folders. I did this by right-clicking on each of the MS SQL Server folders and selecting Properties > Advanced, delesecting "Compress contents to save space", then
"Apply changes to this folder, subfolder, and files" when the next window pops up. Note that I have an x64 installation, and have two program files directories. On a 32-bit system there will only be one.

To save time, I finished the update from my manual download rather than Windows Update. However, I believe applying this fix will also solve the issue if only windows update is used (no manual download). I had a second MS SQL
security update (KB3194720) queued that succeeded once I fixed this.

I have pasted my initial failed log for reference. MS SQL incorrectly identifies my system as Windows 8, however, I can assure you that I am running Windows 10 Pro (build 14959).
