Windows 10: MS Word AutoSave does not work. Brand new version

I just bought MS Office. I downloaded Word onto my MacBook Pro. When I open a new document there is button in the top left that says "AutoSave." When I click on it,, I get a dialogue box, with the file name loaded. But the wheel next to "Loading services" just keeps turning. The box for Place: does not accept an entry, and the Upload button is not active. So nothing saved. I want so autosave on my computer, not Sharepoint. In the Word "Preferences" menu, I opened Save Options. It shows Turn on AutoSave by default. It shows my document name. And Save every 2 minutes. It does not sa

Autosave not properly working for a Word document on OneDrive

I have a Word document saved in the OneDrive folder to allow autosave. But each time I open the document autosave is off again, and switching it on I get the message:



Clicking that my document gets saved in the same folder, but with a new name: "document (1).docx". When I check on onedrive.live.com I see that both the original and the new "(1)" are there.
However, when I reopen either of them autosave is off again. And when I switch it on I get the above message again.
In the save options "autosave onedrive files by default" is checked.

Is there a way to fix this? I already tried cursing Microsoft for some 10 minutes, but that didn't help. Any other solutions?

I want to verify something:
If you right-click the affected Word file where AutoSave keeps turning off, and select Properties, what does it list as the location of the file?

 

Is there AutoSave in WORD?

Thanks for clarifying you never bought MS 365. The only reason I suspected you might have used Microsoft 365 in addition to your owned Office Suite is that MS 365 comes preinstalled on all new PC's bought in the store and sometimes gets opened and used accidentally, even when another Office suite is installed. That's the reason I suggested that if you don't want MS 365 to make sure it's uninstalled in App Settings under Microsoft Office 365. Then it won't get accidentally opened which might be where you saw Autosave.

Don't worry if you have preinstalled MS Office 365 that uninstalling it will affect any files you may have created with it. Those will change to Office 2016 by default, and if not I will help you change them. It's as easy as right clicking on the Word file to choose Properties, then Open With: Office 2016, ticking the box to always open this file type with this app.
