Windows 10: MSASCuiL?

Heyo people, I've recently got a Windows machine, please bear with me (mac user of long time), and one thing I've noticed is that the only item I do not identify on my startup items is MSASCuiL, searching online people mention that is the old Windows Defender but it could also be a malware in disguise. I've tried to deactivate the Ongoing Scan from WD since I have MalwareBytes installed and the item vanished. Can I safely assume it is the legitimate Windows Defender?

One of the reasons I'm concerned is that I was about to open a program from a forum (XDA Developers) that I trust(ed) and windows prevented me saying it wasn't safe, and the only option was "Don't Run", checking other posts some people complained about the file being infected on older versions. After the warning (which happened when I unzipped and tried to open), I pretty much deleted.

Checking on VirusTotal and such, it seems to be clean, so since I haven't open, would it be safe?

msascuil (Microsoft Antivirus Security Centre User Interface Logo) was responsible for the icon appearing on the taskbar system tray, but apparently was later incorporated into the windows security health service and SecurityHealthSystray.exe.

Missing Startup Software

1803 was the last version to include MSASCuiL.exe and MSASCui.exe, they were removed in 1809 and all later versions.

The purpose of MSASCuiL was to display the old Defender icon in the taskbar, while MSASCui was the old Defender UI.

Neither are needed (or will work) in 1809 or higher. In fact, attempting to run the old MSASCui.exe from 1803 in any recent version of W10 will now just open the Windows Defender Security Center.

A leftover for a previous version after updating it? It is not needed as your Startup list also has the item that's now used in place of MSASCuiL, the 'Windows Security notification icon'.

It is safe to delete the MSASCuiL startup entry from the registry (if that's where it is). It may not be a registry entry, it may be a shortcut in your %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder. Early versions of W10 did not show the taskbar Defender icon by default, it was common practice for users to put a shortcut there to make it show on the taskbar.
