Windows 10: msctf.dll Making Acrobat to Crash

While working with Acrobat DC

Version: 17.11.30105.41641 (classic track)

Windows: Windows 10 64bit 1709


Application crashes randomly, there is no any specific workflow which is making the application to crash.

Does not show any error message.

In the event viewer, it shows:


This issue is there on 5000 machines.

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if that helps:

• Click Start.
• Click Control Panel, and then select Programs and Features.
• Select Adobe Reader and click Change.
• Choose the option to repair the Adobe Reader installation
• 5. Scan your system to malware or rootkit.

I want Adobe Acrobat Standard X to be my default not Reader

Thank you for the update.

As per the description, Adobe Acrobat Standard X is not listed as a default app but it pops up listed as a "desktop app".

I suggest you to check the app in the Programs and features.
To do so follow the below steps.

1. Press Windows + R, type appwiz.cpl

If the application is not present in the Programs & Features
then Suggest you to download the app from the link.

choose the appropriate language under Acrobat X standard installer,
and download.
Download Pro or Standard versions of Acrobat DC | Non-subscription

The answer led me to attempt repairing Adobe. This did not work, but must have triggered some action as by some miracle Adobe updated to Acrobat Reader DC and the error went away
