MSI Nvidia GT 730 Low Profile GDDR5 1 GB Direct X 12

I finally gave up on an older upgrade from the original graphics card (Generic) to a Nvidia GT 9400 to ordering a new MSI GT 730. Just wondering if it should install smooth. It is low profile, about the same size of the older original graphics card, and PCI Express x16, it should work, correct?

I know I won't notice an difference but the old upgraded GT 9400 didn't have a fan, and that can be the only reason why the display would shut off after idling 5 minutes. This was so annoying, not to say damaging to the HDD being I had to hard reboot constantly. I grabbed this MSI Nvidia card being it was only 19.95, figuring 20 bucks isn't a lot to throw at an older PC. I know it isn't going to improve performance, but it should cure the constant display issue.

Any thoughts? I know the PC is old, with a Pentium D 2.8, but heck, it sill works rather well for my purposes, and I hate to get rid of it.

    :)

I should be asking if this card will be compatible?

Judging by everything it should be compatible. Those older cards without (even with) a fan can start overheating after a while. I used to take cooler off and change paste under it. For some I even added a small fan on top of their cooler. 40 - 50mm fan connected to a CHA_Fan port or even to PSU used to keep them much cooler.
When changing GPU it's best to prepare appropriate driver and before taking older one out use DDU Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 16.0.0.2 to uninstall old drivers and clean system from it's remnants.

    GT 730 does support windows10.
Make it sure that the card supports UEFI GOP (if it is not an old stock, it should). Otherwise some UEFI features will be missed. Though that would not be a very big deal.

Many Thanks Mike, that helps a lot. I had thought about cleaning up the dirt and dust first, and even as you mentioned, installing a fan, but I hadn't upgraded in a long time, and as much as I know that CPU is old, it still works pretty darn good. I use it more so for Excel, ArcGIS, data mining, data management, and internet browsing. I use it for work, and I kept up with, cleaning it up, making sure regular maintenance is done, which I think why it lasted this long and does so well overall.

I found the new MSI online for sale just recently (its off sale now) for just 20 bucks free shipping, so at least I know I'm not spending much, being eventually I'll get a new Desktop PC. All the advice you gave is great, I will do as you mentioned. I take it you looked at my specs, or at least you know I have a PCI slot x16 in that machine used by the current card, so I think too this will be okay. Thanks again for the link, and advice to uninstall the old driver, I didn't even think of doing that. I'll let you know next week if it works, and if I see any improvements. I just hope the display doesn't continue to shut off on its own anymore, I did just about everything I could in Windows 10 to check every option not to shut the display off. I have heard others in the same situation, and my bet is, because of no fan, or very dirty/dusty venting, overheating and eventually just quit.

Quick question again, the new GT 730 will have an HDMI out, and has a much higher resolution than the current one. Will my PC be able to still handle that, being the graphics card is discreet and independent of the CPU and other hardware on there now (Old)? If so, that would be another good reason to get the new one, especially having a few nice monitors and can hook it up to the TV at least at 1080P. I don't think though it is HDCP compliant, so Netflix and Hulu-Plus, HBO and the TWC app won't be able to broadcast using HDMI on the TV. Oh well, I got a ton of videos, and video apps that can use the HDMI, or I can just Airplay on iTunes using the Apple TV 4, very cool product by the way. No need for Miracast.

    Thanks again - much appreciated!!!

I love working with older machines. Have a new one too, but also have an older laptop, hard to believe it is 10 years old, with Windows 8.1 on one partition, and Windows 10 Home on the other, amazing. Microsoft said it wouldn't work with my small ATI Radeon Mobility 600 (512 MB). LOL, it works like brand new, just no gaming.

Resolution you can change any time but any performance issues should be limited only to games and such 3D programs, 2D stuff will work much better with new card.

Absolutely, as I was saying, the CPU is set, not much to enhance that, programs the same, but any display will overall be a bit better. Worth the 20 bucks I'd say, plus it just takes a few minutes to install, pending everything goes well software and driver wise.

Really, wow, I got a buy! I thought it was 60 or so regular. Maybe Newegg made a mistake? Not sure, but I do think the MSI version is a bit cheaper. I actually bought it already, only because I couldn't say no to 20 bucks. It was bundled though, I had to buy a set of inside PC fans, and a LG Bluray drive (external), for 100 bucks. It was broken down with the MSI Nvidia 730 being 20. Not bad I guess...

Oh, don't forget, there are two versions, I got 1 Gig of GDDR5, most are selling at 2 Gigs GDDR5. I looked it up, it isn't going to be much of a difference for me anyway, plus the 20 bucks, MSI Nvidia GT 730 Low Profile GDDR5 1 GB Direct X 12 :)

    MSI Nvidia GT 730 Low Profile GDDR5 1 GB Direct X 12

Wow, just installed the GT 730 on this old machine, and she is most definitely more noticeably running much better! None of any of the other issues I have chatted about or posted previously are occurring now. The graphics card was the problem. The fan was not running and there was a short circuit. I can see a big difference on this old CPU, being a lot of the power is taken to the GPU on this 730, where the other was so low, it hardly registered any score. So just to know, it is well worth $20-30-or even 50 bucks to upgrade an older slower PC with a better, not pricey, graphics card made today, not yesteryear. Thanks for everyone's input and help! The installation went so smooth, it literally took 5 minutes, a reboot and bang! I did download the MSI Kombuster, I guess it is okay to monitor the heat.

    Thanks again!
