MsMpEng.exe taking massive memory [Windows 10]

Hello. Today I've encountered a problem with windows defender, it is taking way too much memory. Normally, my computer memory will be around 40%, however, today when I turned it on it was at a whopping 70%. Below I've attached a picture that shows that almost 6 MB of RAM are in use even when I did not open any other applications since I turned on my laptop. Restarting the laptop didn't work, turning off real-time protection didn't work, changing the task scheduler didn't work, and I have no idea why MsMp process shows over 700,000 committed. At the time it began happening I hadn't in

    :)

  2. MsMpEng using 19 gigabytes of memory

I was programming today when I checked task manager and noticed that MsMpEng was using 19 GIGABYTES of memory

    Screenshot

This seems like a memory leak.

I have realtime protection and automatic updating turned off

    Explain this, nerds.

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Massive memory useage since updating to Windows 10

I have this very same issue.

I completed the upgrade option and whilst I just surfed the web and watched netflix I didnt notice an issue. Then when I was in game (CSGO) last night the game crashed due to high memory usage. I tried a clean install of Windows 10 (but due to it not activating went back to Win7 and did the upgrade again).

Found I was using 90% of my memory. I have 8GB's of DDR3. I did some googling and found a video which suggested turning off ndu.sys in Windows 8/8.1. I have done this in Windows 10 and my memory usage has now gone back down to normal.

As you can see from the screen shot my memory usage is now looking more 'normal' assuming Standby memory is also available memory for use.

Will update this post if things change.
