Multiple cmd.exe files on Windows 10 - Malware?

    Hello,

When I search my computer for "cmd.exe" in File Explorer, multiple entries pop up.

One is in the System32 folder:

    C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe

According my research so far, this is definitely legitimate.

Another entry pops up in the following location:

    C:\Windows\WinSxS\wow64_microsoft-windows-commandprompt_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.17134.1_none_7ae1fd66b7e7b154\cmd.exe

The "Last Modified" date for both are the same, what I believe to be the exact date I installed Windows.

I just want to make sure that this second file is not malware, since I read something online that having more than one cmd.exe on a computer may mean I have malware.

On a Windows 8.1 virtual machine, similar files exist, I also see one here:

    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\cmd.exe

Can anyone help me verify that these additional cmd.exe are not forms of malware? Can I have more than one cmd.exe without them being viruses?

    Thanks!

    :)

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
