    Multiple issues out of nowhere

    Hello,

I can typically solve problems on my own however this has completely blindsided me. I believe this is all related to an update but I cannot be certain. These problems did arise after a "restart and update" event a day or two ago.

Firstly my start menu is broken. If I click it or press the windows key to open it I am greeted with:

Multiple issues out of nowhere [IMG]

Secondly windows no longer remembers certain default programs. Every single time I open firefox I am greeted with "firefox is not your default browser would you like to set it as?" click yes, set as default. Next time I open it this repeats. I can set it as default close it immediately open it immediately and it's already forgotten. This is also happening with uTorrent. This continues to occur even after going into the default programs options via control panel.

Furthermore on a related note magnet links no longer work. I was being greeted with firefox informing me there was no known protocol for a magnet link, was able to 'fix' firefox into recognizing a magnet link again however windows still no longer recognizes them and I am forced into this:

Multiple issues out of nowhere [IMG]

Now if you'll notice I cannot actually do anything. I cannot select an app as none is listed. An option to search for apps is never given. If I click the box next to "always use this app" nothing happens and "Ok" remains greyed out.

Because I have no start menu I'm forced to do some tasks with Windows key + X however for some reason. Win+X and selecting 'search' does nothing now. The Win+X menu simply closes and no search box appears.

Lastly (as far as I know) all my folder view options have reset. Not only have they reset but if I change them they do not stick. I have a folder of videos I had displaying as large icons. They now display as a list. I can change them back to large icons but if I close the folder and open it again it's back to a list. I assure you I have not hit the 5,000 folder cap I've read about.

That last one as I went back to confirm has somehow fixed itself. The other problems remain.

Here is what I have done thusfar in attempts to fix these problems:

I have run SFC as an administrator and have turned up no errors.

I have rolled back the update I suspected caused the problems: kb3156421

I have attempted a system restore to 5/9. This failed multiple times as it could not access a file. I disabled my kaspersky total security for the second attempt and as it opened back up on reboot disabled it autorunning for the third attempt to no avail. I then attempted to restore back to a point in April and that too has failed. I tried restoring to the point before I rolled back the update suspecting that perhaps because I had rolled back the update system restore was screwing up trying to undo an update which no longer exists but that too failed.

I do not believe I will be able to use system restore to salvage this. I am aware I could reinstall windows but that is not ideal as it's a long and painful process.

If anyone has any ideas I could try I would greatly appreciate it. I have no start menu which blows...and the other problems are annoyances but ones which I have no reason to believe cannot be solved. Thank you.

    :)

  2. Severeal BSOD out of nowhere!

I still need help with this problem. Sometimes my PC works like a charm, and then all of a sudden I get a BSOD!

As stated in other replies my minidump folder stays empty (even after all the tweaks).

I've found some .DMP files somewhere else, but they are 0kb (and therefore can't be uploaded in onedrive!).

Today I've updated all my drivers (thought that might be the problem), but I still got some blue screens today.

I really need someone's help so I can fix this. I use this PC for everything (including my school stuff and for work).

Just a small recap of the whole issue:

I've upgraded my win7 to win10 quite a while ago now (several months) and never had any problems with it.

Until just an hour ago.. I've booted up my PC and it all went fine until I tried to open my first application.

It went straight to a BSOD and when I rebooted my PC it gained a different one. Gotten 3 different ones in total now:

    • PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
    • BAD_POOL_HEADER
    • KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (FLTMGR.SYS)
Link to my DriverView is here:

Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.

Link to my MSinfo32 is here:

As I said in first message my Minidump folder is still empty (even after your guide). Don't know what else to do there..

    Cheers,

    Rowan

  3. Nokia 1208 Lights up out of nowhere

If it's just the back light that lights up without any alert Pay attention to your phone.

When your network signal strength is very low (no bars) The phone will light up, the same happens when you get some signal strength back.

    Multiple issues out of nowhere

    Hello and welcome to Tenforums.

For the Start Menu issue, please see the posts here - people have been reporting success with the powershell command:
    Taskbar/Start button not working! - Page 23 - Windows 10 Forums

For default programs (Firefox), you might try one of the options listed here:
Default Apps - Choose in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

I don't know, but I have found that if I am doing a System restore, it is usually best if I completely remove the 3rd-party AV, as it can cause issues.

Failing these things, you could try a repair install using an in-place upgrade. I would certainly try this before resorting to a clean install.
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums

Use the ISO from MSTechBench to do it. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

The start menu solution has resulted in the forced "sign out" error no longer popping up but the start menu still will not open when I click it or press the windows key.

I have tried those paths to set firefox as default and via doing that I have come to the realization that firefox IS the default browser (and uTorrent is the default ect.) but these programs are unable to detect that. As you can see here:

Multiple issues out of nowhere [IMG]

Continues to greet me and when I look around in my settings it shows this:

Multiple issues out of nowhere [IMG]

    and in another location this:

Multiple issues out of nowhere [IMG]

So firefox is my default browser but for some reason it is not able to recognize this. This also is the case for uTorrent and likely a few other programs which I just haven't gotten around to using yet. A very odd problem.

In my continuing search for answers I came across a post about creating a new user account or two to copy the "TileDataLayer" which may be corrupted in my account and causing at least the start menu problem. This has led to me discovering another problem; I cannot log into other accounts. When I create a new account on this pc and attempt to log in to it I am informed "User Profile Service has failed the sign-in" The only account I can access is my original account with these mounting problems.

I am going to attempt the repair option given at the end of your post. Thank you for your help so far but I feel that with each additional error I run into my chances of a simple fix decrease. I will again state these problems appeared simultaneously just after an update.

And I didn't mention but probably should I have indeed run virus scans to ensure this isn't being caused by malware. My kaspersky is up to date.

I would suggest running ADWCleaner first, just run the scan, look at what items it has flagged, determine if they are indeed something that needs to be gotten rid of, and then run the cleaner. After that, please uninstall your Kaspersky temporarily, do the repair install with in-place upgrade, and see how that goes. I would use the ISO from MSTechBench to do it.

I have done repairs to my system this way, with Start Menu problems, and they have been successful. I hope it is for you as well! *Smile

Thank you for that link. I have run the program and done the repair. Everything seems to be back in working condition. Ironically enough just before I went to do the repair the folder view problem returned. Once the repair completed all I needed to do was set my weather and news apps back on my start menu and I'm back to normal. Thanks again for the assistance. I'll keep the repair iso set aside just in case something happens in the future.

    Multiple issues out of nowhere

That's great news! Glad you got it sorted! Just remember, if you have to do a repair install again, you should get the most current ISO; You cannot do a repair install with an older version - it has to be the same or newer. Please go ahead and mark the thread as solved. Cheers! *Smile
