Why does my keyboard not work on startup

An outdated or corrupt driver could be the reason

With the keyboard unplugged, hold down the ESC key.

While holding down the ESC key, plug the keyboard back into

the computer. Keep holding the ESC key until the

keyboard works in BIOS but not on desktop

    Hello, Alex!

I'll be glad to assist you today. I don't want to assume anything, but is your mouse working? If it is, you can try to fix the problem in Device Manager. Just follow these steps using your mouse/touchpad:

    • Right-click on the Start menu to bring up the Power User Menu, and click
      Control Panel.
    • Click on the
      Hardware and Sound link.
    • Click on
      Device Manager
under the Devices and Printers group at the top of the screen.
    • In the Device Manager window that pops up, expand
Keyboards. There you should find your keyboard listed . Right click on your keyboard and select Update Driver Software... to check and see you have the latest driver for the keyboard to work.
If these steps don't fix your problem, a temporary fix would be to turn on the included On-Screen Keyboard. To do this, follow these steps:

    • Click on
      Start, Settings, Ease of Access
      , then Keyboard
    • Click to turn on the
      On Screen Keyboard.
Either of these two options should get you back to typing again in no time! If you need any other help, let me know!

    Thanks,

    Dustin

My keyboard/ Bluetooth mouse is not working properly.

    Hi

    Thanks for your reply.

Given the persistence of the problem even after extensive troubleshooting and the inability to proceed with Safe Mode due to the keyboard not working, it seems we're dealing with a more complex issue than initially thought. Here are some additional steps and considerations:

Since the built-in keyboard is not responding correctly and prevents you from using Safe Mode, an external USB keyboard and mouse could be a critical workaround. This step is essential to determine if the problem is with the laptop's hardware (specifically the keyboard and possibly the Bluetooth module) or if it's a deeper software issue.

    • Use an external USB keyboard and mouse: Connect them to your laptop. If they work correctly, this strongly suggests the problem lies with the laptop's built-in keyboard and/or Bluetooth connectivity, not with the operating system or software in general.
Another diagnostic step is to check the keyboard functionality outside the Windows environment, such as in the BIOS/UEFI settings.

    • Access the BIOS/UEFI settings: Restart your laptop and press the key required to enter BIOS/UEFI settings (common keys include F2, F10, Del, and Esc). If the keyboard works in these settings, the issue is likely within Windows. If the keyboard does not work even in the BIOS/UEFI, this points to a hardware problem.
If you have access to the BIOS/UEFI, see if there's an option to run a hardware diagnostic. Many laptops include a built-in diagnostic tool that can be accessed during startup.

Given the troubleshooting steps you've already attempted without success, and if the external keyboard/mouse and BIOS/UEFI checks suggest a hardware issue, it might be time to consider professional repair. If your laptop is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer's customer support for assistance. If it's out of warranty, a reputable computer repair service can diagnose and fix the problem, though they will likely charge for their services.

If professional repair is not an immediate option, using an external USB keyboard and mouse could serve as a temporary workaround, allowing you to continue using the laptop.

Given the uncertainty about the laptop's functionality, ensure you back up any important data to an external hard drive, cloud storage, or another safe location to prevent data loss.

Hardware issues, especially when affecting integral components like the keyboard and Bluetooth connectivity, can be challenging to resolve without professional help. The steps outlined above should help narrow down the problem and potentially provide a temporary solution until a more permanent fix is possible.
