Multiple Monitors should default to "Extend desktop to this display"

This has frustrated me for years that multiple monitors still default to "Duplicate desktop" rather than "Extend desktop to this display". I decided to google it today to see if there was finally a fix for it and I found this blog from 2012 so it's been an issue for a minute. Guess what the link in method 1 is not longer available and method 2 links also do not work....does anyone have a solution?

    :)

Change the default multiple screen setup too extend

    Hi,

I am R. Cord, Independent Advisor.

I hope you are doing well.

I can suggest you many steps, try it and tell me if helps!

Connect the external display to your laptop and make sure it is detected.

Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings from the context menu.

In the Display settings window, scroll down to the Multiple displays section.

go in the drop-down menu under multiple displays and select extend desktop from the options.

press apply and then keep changes to confirm the changes.

This should set your default multiple screen setup to extend.

    Regards,

    R. Cord

Windows 10 default to single monitor display

Are you using VGA monitor cable or HDMI or DVI?

What notebook and display are you using?

I have XPS, Inspiron, and multiple latitude notebooks. When connecting to Dell monitor (VGA, HDMI to DVI, or HDMI), my settings always default to external display. However, I can use on of the following three options to extend:

    • Windows Key + P (Cycle through options = 2nd only, 1st only, extend, duplicate).
    • Display Settings > Display > Multiple Displays > Extend These displays
    • Intel HD Control Panel > Graphic Options > Output To > Extend Desktop.
Make sure to update computer drivers (manufacturer website) as well as run Intel Driver Update Utility.
