Windows 10: Multitasking improvements in Windows 10 and Microsoft Edge

Web browsing doesnât happen in isolation, and users frequently multitask between their web browser and other apps using the Taskbar and Alt + Tab. Traditionally, these surfaces have been almost exclusively focused on apps, forcing users to take additional steps to get to the tab they needâuntil now.

With the latest Insider versions of Windows 10 and Microsoft Edge, your tabs now appear in Alt + Tab, allowing you to quickly switch between both apps and sites. You can also easily access the tabs for your most important sites directly on the Taskbar. The changes are just the first of many designed to make you more productive and save you time while multitasking.

Browser tabs in Alt + Tab

Have you ever tried to use the Alt + Tab keyboard shortcut only to be surprised when it took you to the last app you were using rather than the last thing you were doing? The line between apps and sites has blurred as people spend more and more time in web browsers, but Alt + Tab was still limited to just apps. Weâve heard your feedback about how frustrating this was, so weâve updated Alt + Tab to show your browser tabs right alongside your apps. This makes switching between open tabs as seamless as switching between open windows.

How to Switch Between Open Apps when pressing Alt+Tab

We know Alt + Tab is sacred, so you can choose whether to show all, some, or none of your tabs by going to Settings > System > Multitasking in Windows. All your tabs are shown by default, but if you find it to be a bit much you can set Alt + Tab to only show the last three or five tabs instead. Weâd love to hear which setting you prefer!

How to Change what Alt+Tab Shows in Windows 10

Quickly access tabs for your pinned sites via the Taskbar

Weâve given pinned sites on the Taskbar a big upgrade, making it easier than ever to get back to the tabs for your most important sites. Pinned sites have always let you quickly open a website or switch to your most recent tab. With todayâs update, pinned sites will now appear as running on the Taskbar and you can click on the icon to see all of your open tabs across any of your Microsoft Edge windows. This makes it easy to quickly find and switch to a tab for a specific site without having to search through all your open tabs and browser windows.

Try pinning a site you visit frequently by going to Settings and More (â¦) > More tools > Pin to taskbar. We think youâll love how easy it is to multitask.

Getting started

To start using these new features, youâll need:

Microsoft Edge Insider Build 85.0.561.0 or higher (Canary or Dev Channel)

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 20175 or higher (Dev Channel)

These features are currently rolling out to a subset of Insiders, so if you donât see them, please check back soon.

Once youâre up-to-date, simply choose your preferred Alt + Tab setting under Settings > System > Multitasking or pin your favorite site to the taskbar by going to Microsoft Edge and selecting Settings and More (â¦) > More tools > Pin to taskbar.

For this initial preview release, youâll need to remove and re-pin existing sites on your Taskbar (including removing them from the edge://apps page). Weâll be updating existing pinned sites to work with these features in the near future.

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner."
