    What was the version of win 7 that was on the machine?

    Was it activated?

    What version of win 10 did you clean install?

    What was the error code?

    How would I go about recovering my Windows activation key and doing a fresh install?

    You'd have to clean install win-10 and use the new machines qualifying win-7 or win-8 activation key

    You can also download the win-10 iso file and right click and mount it.

    But the other machine 10 install belongs with the other mother board.

    You don't need to enter a key at all if you are activated on 10 already when doing a clean install.

    If you enter a key it will tell you it is use and not accept it if you have used it elsewhere

    At least it did for me when I tried to activate a generation 2 Hyper-V VM after a generation 1 VM (made by mistake) with same key. Second activation my 7 key was rejected as it was "in use on another computer"

    just clean installed on Hyper-V, used another key. Success.
