Must use system restore when reboot

Latest Asus Bios update, Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.192.
Users files are located on my D: drive.

When the computer is shut down the message "Getting Windows Ready. Don't turn off your computer" is displayed.
When rebooting the process stops at the lockscreen and USB ports are not recognized.

When booting into the UEFI of the Asus Z170-Deluxe, the USB ports are operational.

I can use System Restore, to restore to exactly the same state as before shutdown of the computer. The computer will reboot and USB ports are operational and I can login to Windows.

Can this be a motherboard related problem even though the USB ports work fine in the UEFI?

Error: "To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore" on Windows 10

So has anyone else's PC been f***ed lately? Mine just randomly decided to bluescreen three times and then refused to boot beyond BIOS. I'm trying to restore with wbb05's method now... For the moment stuck using Kali from a thumbdrive Must use system restore when reboot :p

  3. Error: "To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore" on Windows 10

I had a problem with a black screen and wanted to restore Windows 10 to a Restore Point.

I booted into Advanced Recover Options with the DVD image of Windows 10 that I had.

When I looked for a way to see the Restore points that I had created, Advanced Recovery

    gave me this notice:

"To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore."

How can it be asking me to specify which Windows installation when there is only one: Windows 10?

There is no other operating system in this machine, I just installed Windows 10. And besides, I am not given any options to choose from operating systems, there is no menu at all anywhere. I never created a double boot to different operating systems or anything.

So, how can I restore the system to a restore point from the Advanced Recovery Options ?

(by the way, the machine, after several start ups, booted into Windows again, but I want to know how I can use Restore Point from the Advanced Recovery Options when it gives me this notice.

    Hi simrick,

Fast startup was off, however when UEFI setting Fast Boot -> [Disabled], Fast startup became enabled.
In UEFI Native ASPM -> [Enabled] to allow OS control of ASPM. And I loaded system defaults from UEFI and also cleared CMOS.
(then Fast Boot -> [Disabled] and Native ASPM -> [Enabled] set in BIOS again).

In Device Manager all USB devices cannot be turned off to save power.
fast startup and sleep are not checked.
And in Accounts, use my sign in to automatically finish setting up my device after an update or restart is disabled.

An USB drives are plugged into some of the USB ports, to cause those port to be read during start up.

The computer can be shut down or restarted and the USB ports are being recognized.

However, it will take another day or so of normal use of the computer to see if this problem is resolved.

    Thank you for your suggestion.

After I restored a backup from early November, ran sfc /scannow and DISM /Onlin /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, and installed new drivers using Driver Genius, the USB ports are being recognized and Win10 is able to boot consistently. Before deciding to restore a backup from November, RealBench max CPU temp was 100 C. Now the CPU max temperature is 80C.

The most recent BIOS updated the CPU microcode to protect against Spectre.

Even though I have the most recent Windows Updates (Semi-Annual Channel), the utility program InSpectre ( GRC | InSpectre   ) shows a Vulnerability to Meltdown and Spectre.

    That's good news.
Yes, I don't think the manufacturers have got this whole thing quite figured out yet....

Windows update kb4073290 took care of the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerablility. See Sticky in Win 10 News.
