Windows 10: my all in one hp computer will only boot if I do a hard restart.

Screen blank after "PC Mode"message. If I unplug everything including power cord, hold power button down for 30 sec and then plug everything back in then I can turn on computer and it will run perfectly. I have tried a basic System Restore keeping files in Windows 10 but no change. If I leave in sleep mode it starts up perfectly. Is this a hardware or software problem? Should I start again and boot from my original HP restore cds? Any help appreciated.

I'm guessing that the 'boot sequence' in BIOS specifies to first and only device to boot from is the USB. I'm further guessing that the Windows installation somehow modified the boot sequence/boot priority in BIOS.

My experience with others HP computers has been quite limited. In one instance, a friends' HP all-in-one computer 'refused' to boot from the hard drive after I had cloned the old one and put in the new one. It came down to accessing the 'boot sequence' (or maybe they called it 'boot priority' or something like that) in BIOS.

I don't recall the exact method to get into BIOS, but here's a Google result: enter BIOS on HP 14s-dk0026au - Google Search that offers several Youtube videos of how to do it.

The first step is to determine if the hardware 'sees' its new drive. The list of drives should appear on the first screen, in many BIOSes. I assume it's seeing the new drive as you installed Windows onto it.

Next, it's necessary to navigate 'through' or 'past' several screens to reach the boot sequence/priority settings. Once there, it should be self explanatory to 'move' the HD to the top of the list of possible boot devices. Then SAVE and exit BIOS.

PLAN B:
Once successfully entered into BIOS, navigate to the last screen, which is usually the 'exit' screen, and click the option named something like: 'Use BIOS Defaults and restart'. I assume that HP set up their BIOS such that the hard drive is the first choice.

By the way...have the USB unplugged the whole time!

Have a similiar situation using a DiamondMax Plus 8, 20GB Mfg Date 4/15/03. Drive used as a second system drive. Drive is recognized in boot menu but not in drive list. Drive is always connected. Computer started locking up for several seconds at a time. Chkdsk on drives and couldn't find that drive. Removed drive from bay to make sure connections were ok and heard the beeping. Shutdown and restart and never got to windows screen. Restarted several times then saw drive in boot menu and Windows loaded but Maxtor not in drive menu. When recognized in boot menu, computer will start but beeps and is not found.

Tried kicking it real hard but no improvement. Any suggestions?
