Windows 10: My college email is asking for for me to choose the number shown on my authenticator app...

My college email is asking for for me to choose the number shown on my authenticator app but I am not receiving any notifications or set of numbers to choose from since i never connected the account to the app. I tried adding my account to the app but it asked me to go to the authenticator app with a number. Authenticator App not showing any numbers

For two step authentication to log into Microsoft account, the terminal display says tap the number 12 in the authenticator app. I go to that app on my Android phone, and click on the Authentication, and what i see is a generated one-time password code (to enter somewhere). I don't see the number 12 or any group of numbers for me to selector click on. The Google authenticator works well. So where are the numbers in the authenticator that I am suppose to click on ? The computer times out, click Next to send another, and it sends the same number 12.....pretty high security here....

At the top choose Security and Privacy

Under Account Security choose More Security Settings

Scroll down for the following

Your account is protected by two-step verification.

• Turn off two-step verification
  

You've set up an authenticator app.
Learn more about identity verification apps.

Before you can set up an identity verification app, you need to add another phone number or alternate email address, or verify an existing one.

• Set up identity verification app
  
• Turn off existing apps

Choose Set Up identity verification app which will give you the barcode/secret code you need to get your authenticator app going.

Be sure to verify the pairing was successful by entering the code generated on the newly setup app.

Help Me Understand What I'm Doing Wrong

I may be missing something, but I think what's being suggested is you use the arrow to choose another different method other then 'phone number' such as email or an authentication app, whatever's on the drop down list that's not a phone number.
