Hi Maggie, use this Screen Filter keyboard shortcut to return color to your screen:

Window + Ctrl + C

With regards to the alarm sound, can you explain the sound and when you are hearing it

Also, click your Start Button, type alarm and open the Alarm app from the resulting list - is there an alarm set on that App ?

Alarm doesn't make sound in Windows 10

Are you referring to Alarms app?

Yes, it's called 'Alarms & Clock'. I access this from 'Start' menu.

Are you able to hear sounds from other apps like Music and video?

Yes I can hear other sounds

First check AM and PM example see if you have set 6 PM (evening) instead of 6 AM (Morning).

I use 24-hour method of timing, SO, it is not a problem.

To fix this problem, use the following methods in the order in which they are listed. After each method, check if problem is fixed. If the problem is not fixed, try the next method.

Method 1: I would suggest you to follow the troubleshooting steps suggested in this Microsoft article and check if it helps:

First, try running the Apps troubleshooter. This tool can automatically identify and fix some problems
with apps and the Store.

If running the troubleshooter doesn't help, follow suggestion from this article to fix the app yourself.

This troubleshooter is not for Windows 10 Pro, I guess.

If issue persist, proceed to next method.

Method 2:

Check with the volume settings. Please follow the steps given below and check if it helps.

Right click on the speaker icon in taskbar and select volume control options.

Put a check mark on "All devices currently playing sound".

Make sure you have "The default communication device unchecked".

Place a check mark on both speakers and headphones. Click Apply and OK.

These instructions doesn't match with my system !!

Unknown alarm

What Steve108 is suggesting is a restart because that is a different process than a shutdown + startup. If you want to troubleshoot and learn how to fix your PC, it sounds like a logical next step.
If you think because your PC functions properly now and your best move is to do nothing and gamble that the issue won't return, maybe you should just buy lottery tickets and send your PC to a shop.
I'm not trying to be cruel or nasty, it's just in the real world, faults seldom fix themselves and never return. This does happen but not usually.
We try to assist users on repairing their PCs with the least amount of grief and with the best reliability.
We all volunteer our time because we have an obsession with fixing PCs and the priority is always a successful outcome and a satisfied user.

I appreciate your help, but there is nothing that I could do to satisfy you.

Were you able to configure Process Monitor to trigger on and capture the notify.wav file being executed?

I gave notify.wav because it was the closest I could come to the sound, I don't know which sound it actually played.

I fail to see how the tesing to establish if the alarm still sounds can take at least a week

If Windows 10 is shut down completely on this procedure
Step 1: Open Start menu, select Power button.

Step 2: Press and hold the Shift key on keyboard, while clicking on Shut down, and then release the Shift key to perform a full shutdown.

and the alarm still sounds, then you can be more or less assured that it is not a windows setting

Got to messing around and trying to boot from an external hard drive, (which never happened, got error 0XC0000225), and the alarm returned and I went through the 2 steps and still got the alarm.
