Windows 10: my computer suddenly plays system sounds but no media sounds

    my computer suddenly plays system sounds but no media sounds


    i checked to make sure my speakers arent muted but it plays the typical windows sounds but going to youtube/spotify/fb/twitter videos and music dont play sound. even with headphones in it is muted. i also tried running the system checker and it said audio was just fine but it obviously isntThe only change i made was hooked an external ssd to my thunderbolt port but ive played games since then and audio was fineETA: i found the issue. the sound worked in chrome and i found out that somehow firefox was muted in the volume mixer.

    Media PC lost all sound suddenly

    Hope someone can help with this: have a media PC outputting to a TV through HDMI, both sound and picture. Worked fine up until yesterday, was ok in afternoon, turned on in evening and no sound, picture is fine still. Don't know if anything was updated when it turned on as it wasn't me that booted it up.

    In the Playback tab of the Sound panel I have the TV listed, going through AMD High Definition Audio, which is the built in graphics chip. There is no activity in the output bar shown there on the right when things are playing. If I try and do any Test of sounds it instantly says Failed to Play Test Tone. Same happens if I try a Test on the Realtek Digital Output which is the onboard sound, but then nothing is plugged in to that so I don't know if that's as it should be.

    Device manager says everything working ok. Any suggestions?

    EDIT: if I try the Windows troubleshooter it says "Plug in the Speaker, Headset or Headphone. The Device does not appear to be plugged in."

    Sound Quality

    One thing that sticks out from looking at your "My Computer" specs. You list "ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)" which suggests you do not have the correct sound hardware driver. Your motherboard has Realtek sound and the first step is to install the Realtek sound drivers. My ASUS also came with Sonic Studio 2 which is a sound enhancement package. Check the ASUS install disc to see if you have something similar.

    May not be a speaker problem.
