    My computer suddenly stopped letting me accessing external memory. Hard drives, sd cards,...


    Windows 11, My computer suddenly stopped letting me accessing external memory. Hard drives, sd cards, thumb drives. All are recgonised but all come up with is not accessable access is denied. I look at properities / security and it tells me that I must have read access. I try to run as an administrator and it tells me I do not nhave permission to view or edit the permission settings ???

    Why you're experiencing this kind of issue can be due to a variety of reasons.

    Having said that, please provide the following for us to be able to learn more about your concern:

    • Have you tried accessing the same external hard drive on a different Windows 10 PC? If yes, what is the result?
    • Have you tried plugging a different external hard drive or other external drives like flash drive and SD card? If yes, did you get the same result?
    • What are the troubleshooting steps you've already done?

    In the meantime, running the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter finds and repairs problems with your devices and hardware. Here's how to run the
    Hardware and Devices troubleshooter:

    • Right-click the Start icon, then select Control Panel.
    • Choose the Large icons option from the View by drop down list found on the upper-right part of the Control Panel window.
    • Locate then select Troubleshooting.
    • Click View all from the left pane.
    • Locate and click Hardware and Devices to run the troubleshooter then follow the next steps.

    External Hard Drive

    Hi John,

    We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

    • Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
    • Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.
    The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.
