    My computer won’t open the boot device selection menu


    I’m trying to fix an old computer I have, but it doesn’t boot to the sign in screen. I’m just trying to get it working again but it won’t boot from my USB since I can’t open the menu to do so. Is it possible to use the Command Prompt to boot using the USB since my HD is mia?

    Selecting bootup device

    Hello all,

    Loaded up my computer last night and it keeps prompting me to select a boot device. I'm pretty sure the hard-drives knackered but was wondering if I've gone through every possibility before going out and buying a new one.....

    So far i've....

    - Checked the boot up menu in BIOS. Drive isnt found
    - The drive does sound as if its still spinning
    - Tried mounting through Linux, no luck. Internal error.
    - Checked connections

    Any suggestions?

    Can't boot from DVD drive

    Is your controller in RAID/AHCI modes? If so, the DVD drive will be listed as a separate device in the list of available boot devices, not as "CDROM". Remember that when setting boot device priority. Otherwise, read the manual to see which hotkey during POST brings up the boot menu that lets you select which device to boot from. Even here, the drive will be listed separately, and not as "CDROM".

    reboot and select property boot device

    You need to set your main Harddrive which has your Operating System on as the first harddrive to boot, if have more than one harddrive.

    open Bios
    boot priority
    Select the OS harddrive as first boot drive , If not sure switch between them
    Set correct time and date if wrong
    Save and reboot

    If not sure on steps , give the Make and model number of motherboard and can assist you.

    Hopefully no damage to the HDD
