  1. my dad died and can't access his computer

my father died and left me his computer. unfortunately he didn't write down the password as i couldn't contact him as I live in another state. my father gave them said password. but no one wrote it down. I can provide email, death certification, and any information that is needed. I could just factory reset, but I want to make sure they're no important info, or pictures I would like to keep. if Microsoft can't do this. is there another way I.E computer repair place or something.

    :)

One computer cannot access other network computers.

So I've tried every troubleshooting step I know:
    • Double checked that Net Bios was enabled
    • Ran a bunch of network commands:
      • flushed DNS
      • registered dns
      • pinged and located the named computers successfully
    • Reset my router to factory settings

Nothing works when I try to access via explorer. I'm still baffled by the fact that every other computer can access each other AND access this computer. It's just the outgoing connection from this machine that doesn't work.

    Any thoughts?

How to use TightVNC for remote computer access for my Dad

If you're going to use TeamViewer then I suggest:

    1. Set your own password and disable the random password (Options > Security).
    2. Allow access at Windows logon (Options > Security) so you can reboot and get back in if TeamViewer is set to 'Start with Windows' (Options > General).
    3. Set your Dad's wallpaper to 'solid colour' and remove the tick from the Remove remote wallpaper checkbox (Options > Remote control). That way, if he ever says a picture's appeared on his desktop then you'll be able to see it.
    4. Tick the Send key combinations checkbox (Options > Remote control) so you can use things like Winkey+e at your end to start File Explorer on your Dad's PC.
    5. Tick the Show your partner's cursor checkbox (Options > Remote control) so, if he asks you to change his cursor size, you'll be able to see it.
    6. Tick the Automatically minimize local TeamViewer panel checkbox (Options > Advanced). Your Dad doesn't need to see this and you'll be forever minimizing it yourself manually anyway just to get it out of the way.
    7. Set all this up on TeamViewer at your end first, export the settings (Options > Advanced) then use TeamViewer's transfer mode (Files & Extras > Open file transfer) to copy the export over to your Dad's PC and import them into his TeamViewer (Options > Advanced).
    8. You'll still need to talk your Dad through closing the TeamViewer 'Thank you for playing fair' dialog which appears on his screen after the connection is closed. Just make sure he knows to only click on the 'OK' button (or - better still - use the X 'close' button on the far-right of the titlebar).
I've been using TeamViewer since version 4 and IMO it's by far the best solution for use with aging parents. (I use AutoHotkey as well and wrote a 4-line script to automate connection to my Dad's PC without any of the usual typing of partner ID or password at my end. Let me know if this would be of any use to you.)

    Hope this helps...

How to use TightVNC for remote computer access for my Dad

Go with TeamViewer or built-in Remote Desktop. Both are much easier to setup and use, especially TeamViewer. You both install it.

Go to the link above, click on Download for free and save the TeamViewer_setup.exe file on your Desktop or in your Download folder.
Go to wherever you saved the file, right click on it and select Open to start the install.
Make sure Default installation and Personal / Non-commercial use are selected, click Accept - finish.

When you start TeamViewer you get a window like this. Your Dad has to install it and start it also.
He then gives you his Partner ID which you enter into the Partner ID box then click Connect.
