My disk is pegged at 100% at startup

My disk is consistently pegged at 100% at startup for at least 20 to 30 minutes! I cannot see any specific process that is causing that to happen. I am able to do things that eventually materialize click on an icon, type something, but it's minutes in between activities. I have also reduced my "enabled" apps at startup to bare minimum. Still cannot see what is causing this. How do I stop this???

    :)

What is making the hard drive peg on boot up

    Hi tdehan

So, it pegs after booting . .. .

When your PC boots, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)

If necessary choose the processes Tab

Click on the Disk Column Header, so that arrow faces down

When your hard drive is t 100%, what are the top 5 processes listed?

  3. 100% Disk for minutes after Startup

More than 20 minutes after wakeup from sleep, I'm still seeing 100% disk utilization which is slowing me to a crawl.
Here's a screen grab of Task Manager, showing what is often the case: SYSTEM and AVAST are the heaviest users, but when I look at the list of processes using disk, do these add up to 100% ????.

  4. My disk is pegged at 100% at startup

100% disk usage on boot up for at least 5 to 10 minutes

Hi there, I did a clean boot as you suggested and the boot up time became considerably longer and although disk usage was 100%, this was only for a minute or so. The program at the top of the disk utilisation list this time though was service host:superfetch.

However I then didn't disable anything in the services tab but disabled all the programs in the startup tab and restarted. This resulted in a very speedy boot up AND there was no 100% disk utilisation. I've done this several times enabling a couple of programs
on startup and the disk utilisation is no longer 100%.

It appears therefore as though it was some kind of conflict in the startup programs that was causing the 100% disk utilisation.

Thanks very much for your assistance.
