Windows 10: My downloads keep getting a codec error, how can I fix that. Windows 11.

When I try to play a download, I keep getting a codec error. Not all the time but most of it. I am so confused about the fixes they suggest, can any one say in plain language how to do it. Many thanks

You might be experiencing this issue because of corrupted codec files. To help us identify the cause of this error, we would like to know the following information:

• Which app are you using to open and play your media files?
• Have you installed any codec packs on your computer?
• What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?

In the meantime, we suggest that you download and install the
official Codec packs from Microsoft. These packs can correct problems experienced with previously-downloaded codecs.

List the EXACT "blah, blah" you mention, here please... for ALL installation cases!

(Sound like a possible "DLL-Hell" issue, but "Windows File Protection" &/or "System File Protection" should have countered for this... no biggie, there's ways around that too!)

To do this, follow these steps in Windows Media Player 11:

On the Tools menu, click Options.

Click the Player tab, click to select the Download codecs automatically check box, and then click OK.

Try to play the file. If you are prompted to install the codec, click Install.
