Windows 10: My email address is associated with both my Work/School and Personal Accounts - Is this a...

I received a Windows pop-up stating "It looks like this email [my work email] is used with more than one account from Microsoft [ie, my Work/School account and my personal account]. But when I log into my Personal account, I use my personal email - not my work email, even if the pop-up says it is linked to my Personal account. Is this a problem? If so, how do I disassociate my work email from my Personal account? Many thanks in advance for guidance on this issue.

As for the part where you can connect your work address to a personal Microsoft Account (or as Microsoft words it - adding your work or school email to your Outlook.com account)

It states the following underneath:

• You cannot add an alias that is already associated with another Microsoft account.
  
• You can't add an email address that's already associated with a work or school account as an alias.
  

This is good as I would always want my private personal data and my business data kept separate.

I was let go by a company that I believe I associated my personal email address with on their company account. I now want to associate it with my Microsoft personal account, but when putting it in as an alias, it states it's associated with another account
or is already used. How do I get my personal email address as an alias to my account?

 

Duplicate Personal & Work/School Email Account Problem

Hi Emily- Thank you for your response.

1) I have closed/opened the personal account a couple of times as I've struggled with this issue. The most recent closure was this morning, so I'm still 30 days away from the permanent elimination of that account.

2) My company purchased 365 business products, yes. And yes, this is a custom domain email.

3) Settings/Accounts/Access work or school: Yes, my 'work or school' account IS listed here, with the option to 'disconnect' or 'manage', which opens this account page in accounts.live.com.

Under Accounts/Email & accounts:

- The old personal account is listed under "accounts used by email, calendar and contacts". If I attempt to add a new account here, and enter my email address, it sends a code to Authenticator, and then I get "Oops, something went wrong...there is a problem with your microsoft account. To fix this, sign in to account.live.com from a browser." (I suspect the error is that again, it's pushing me back into the personal account, and the account is slated for closure).

- "Accounts used by other apps" lists both the personal and work/school accounts. I removed the personal account here, but it has no effect on the big picture problem.

I should mention that I can easily tell the accounts apart because the email address name displays with a capitalized first letter in the work account and not in the personal account. But when I 'add account' with the capitalized email, it doesn't matter - the Authenticator request somehow gets directed to my personal account, which yields the error message.
