my experience trying to re-install w7

    thu 10 sep 2015

after successfully upgrading to w10 from w7 I wiped my hdd and did a clean w7 install (no w10, just w7) which activated aok - I then kicked off windows update which started aok but after a while it just hung on me

wiped the hdd again and tried again, just w7, installed aok, activated aok but windows update though starting out good again then just hung on me

wiped the hdd again, did a clean w10 install off of the iso, no probs, installed ok, skipped the key bit and booted to see that it had self activated aok

I then shrunk the w10 partition and re-installed w7 as a dual boot, went through aok and activated aok - I then brought up windows update to get w7 up to date, initally windows update let me download updates but after a while it just hung

I then went through the whole process a second time, from wiping my hdd but no luck, the same thing happened, I was unable to get windows update to complete

bit of disappointment, I need to be able to vpn into work and my employer's vpn software doesn't like edge or the ie 11 on w10, installed chrome and firefox and again my employer's vpn software rejected both

all three browsers worked aok with my employer's vpn software when I used w7

    any ideas?

    thanks

    :)

    W7 Re install

    Hi,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community. Your interest in Windows 10 is much appreciated.

We understand how you feel about the situation. We're sorry for the trouble.

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps

Method 1: I suggest you to update drivers and check if that helps. If that issue persist please uninstall and reinstall latest drivers available in manufacturer website.

    • Press “Windows + X” and select Device manger.
    • Select Display Adapter and expand the driver icon.
    • Right click on the driver icon and click on Update.
    • Follow the onscreen instructions to update the driver.

    Method 2::Compatibility mode

I would suggest you to install the latest available drivers on manufacturer's website in compatibility mode.

Follow the steps below on how to install driver in compatibility mode:

    1. Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website and save it on your local disk.

    2. Right click on the setup file of the driver and select “Properties”.

    3. Select “Compatibility” Tab.

    4. Place a check mark next to “Run this program in Compatibility mode” and select operating system from the drop down list.

    5. Let the driver install and then check the functionality.

Hope this helps. If the issue remains unresolved, please get back to us and we would be happy to help.

    W7 Re install

    Hi,

I want to revert to windows 7, but when I go to recovery on windows 10 it gives no option to rollback saying my window7 files are missing.

Can I re install windows 7 using my windows 7 usb original files. It is a genuine OEM version.

I might add my 30 days are up tomorrow 13 sept. I want to revert because I keep on getting trouble with the graphics driver.

Every time I get an update after that I get a green or black screen when trying to view videos, and I have to re install an earlier driver.

While this works , it is annoying since I had no such trouble with windows 7.

    Any help appreciated

    Rayal

thanks for responding, my w7 doesn't come with sp1 but I do have it and did install that but still got the same result, windows update went on to hang - been a while since I did manual updates, in fact I thought one no longer could but I'll google w7 manual updates and give a go, thank again

  9. I had to do this a while back when a PC failed to upgrade from Win7 and I decided to reinstall from scratch. I think it was somewhere around 700 updates -- which took well over ten hours to complete. And yes, it does it in spurts, pauses for a while, and then starts up again. I thought it was hung, so I rebooted it, restarted updated, and it picked up where it left off -- after spending hours "searching for updates".

Open Control Panel, click on Windows Update. Select 10 or so and install. Repeat until done (many hours later).

This is another reason disk imaging is the way to go. You never, ever have to go through a from scratch install and waste days getting back to where you were.

disk imaging? it would make sense, re manual updates, see what you mean, thought you were referring to what one could do back in the day when one could download updates and park them and then install then afterwards

something else, any ideas oh how windows knows one has successfully gone the upgrade route to w10 so that when one wipes one's hdd and does a w10 install off the iso it self activates?

I initially tried upgrading to w10 off of the iso before I upgraded (to see what the install would do) and it asked for a w10 key, but when did the same after upgrading I got the 'skip' button when it asked for the w10 key? just curious

If you were asked for key when trying to do the upgrade from install media, you used the wrong install media. What version of 10 you get, Home or Pro, depends on what version of Windows you upgrade from. You need 7 Pro or better, or 8.1 Pro to get 10 Pro. Otherwise its 10 Home. Example, if you have 7 Home Premium and try to upgrade to 10 Pro, it will ask for a key. Do the upgrade to 10 Home and it won't ask for a key. Once you do the free upgrade and activate Windows 10 your hardware ID is stored on the activation server along with which version of Windows 10 you got, Home or Pro.. You don't need a key if you install the same version you got via the free upgrade, you us the skip option.

thanks, I have w7pro, I could've downloaded the wrong media but I doubt it as I got the skip button when I did a clean install after I did the initial upgrade and I just took a look and I'm now running w10pro

a sign off here, thanks for all the replies

I followed up on what ztrucker suggested and downloaded all the updates manually and got everything up and running

had to slipstream w7sp1 which is something I last did with wxp

there are some helpful utilities (free) out there that'll, legitimately, download all the updates from the official server and then there are also a load of (free) utilities that'll build it all into a bootable iso, there are even demos on youtube, if anyone is interested google on 'windows updates downloader' and 'win utils'

    thanks again
