  2. Folders on desktop won't open.

I upgraded my PC from Windows 11 home to Pro. Now I am having issues with the folders on the desktop. double click dont work and right click and pressing open dont work.

I went to task manager and restarted windows explorer. Didn't fix.

In task manager I ended window explorer and the started a new explorer (explorer.exe). Didn't fix.

    I did these steps.

Check the Registry Entries to Fix Folder Not Opening on Double Click

    • Click on Start, type Run, and input regedit. The registry will open.
    • Go to HKEY CURRENT USER > Control Panel > Mouse.
    • Find and open the "Double Click Height key" & "Double Click Width key". Then change the value to 4.
    • Restart the computer now, after restarting your problem must be resolved.
    • The value was already set at 4 for both. Didn't fix
I can look at the folders in the One drive on line and see the contents but thats it. There has to be a glitch somewhere. I need help.

Even if I put a new folder on the desktop it won't open.

Desktop items open Libreoffice; windows bugged and flickering

My mother's PC had the most bizarre bug I've ever seen this morning.

PC specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit
Version: 1903 when problem occurred (1909 now)

    What happened:
    • all desktop items, including folders, opened in Libreoffice Writer; once open it displayed a blank document then began flickering as if it had bugged while scrolling
    • opened Task Manager from the task bar, selecting the second tab opened the final tab, which began flickering like Libreoffice
    • problems stopped after a restart, then occurred again after another restart; then stopped after the PC ran for a short time
    • no error popups or BSODs
    • she said Candycrush reported an error earlier but it didn't occur when I looked at it; she said it mentioned "something about the desktop"

    Steps I've taken:
    • did a quick virus scan then reboot scan with Windows Defender; no problems found
    • sfc /scannow; no problems found
    • installed update KB4537572 and upgraded system to 1909; updates appear to have been successful, no other updates available

At the moment the problem has disappeared, but since it reoccurred previously I'm not sure it hasn't been fixed.

I'm out of ideas. What else can I check and what other tests can I run? Based on the given information could anyone suggest what the problem might be?

  4. My folders on the desktop will not open on the desktop, they open to the task bar. I...

"Open file location" or “Save image as” opens to Desktop folder instead of target folder.

Basically, trying to ‘save to a target folder’ or ‘open from a target folder’ goes to the Desktop folder instead of the target folder.

    Examples:

    • Enter a file name in desktop search bar. List of possible files, desired file is in a target folder within another folder. Right click on desired file, then ‘Open file location’. Result is Desktop folder instead of target folder.
    • Right click on a folder from the Taskbar File Explorer jump list, it (as normal) gives me a list of Frequent folders I have used. Then, when I right click on one of the frequent folder names, I get the list. The first entry is ‘Open’; the second entry is ‘Open file location’. Left clicking on either of those entries opens the Desktop folder instead of the target folder.
    • When I am downloading an image from a browser (Save image as), I have selected the target location folder, but it defaults to the Desktop folder. This happens in both Chrome and Edge, each of which has a target folder (not Desktop) download location selected in their Settings section.

It seems like the target folder is momentarily opened (perhaps ½ second), then immediately closes and then the Desktop folder shows.

Additional test: When in File Explorer, say, Recent section, right clicking on the item, then Open file location does correctly take me to the Target folder (not to the Desktop folder). And after searching for an item within File Explorer, right clicking on the item, then Open file location works properly (takes me to the Target file location).

So, within File Explorer, Open file location works ok, but outside of File Explorer, Open file location defaults to the Desktop folder instead of target location.

Would appreciate any hints as to why this is happening on Windows 11; did not happen with Windows 10.
