A couple months ago, my RTX 4090 started acting up. I bought it about 6 months ago, so it worked almost perfectly fine for 4 months. Something I did notice was occasional screen glitches, most often when switching tabs to/from Youtube in Chrome. They resembled a glitchy checkerboard, taking up small blotches of the screen, and only lasted 1 or 2 frames. It seems to happen whenever it's put under extremely high load for prolonged periods of time long single-frame or viewport renders in Blender, the Unreal 5 editor, graphically intensive games, specifically Universe Sandbox and PalworldIt can

Screen Flickers in Office Products & Videos are Black Screen

Hello. I have a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming Laptop running Windows 10 that I got in 2017. Here are some additional specs:

    • One 128 GB SSD (C: drive, which has the OS on it) and 1 TB HDD (D: drive)
    • An integrated Intel HD Graphics 630 GPU and NVidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU
    • In early 2021, I installed a refurbished battery
In early July, I was getting a bunch of power kernel errors. I couldn't go more than 45 minutes without getting a blue screen. I made the decision to reinstall Windows (Settings -> Recovery -> Reset this PC), keeping my files but reinstalling from local files instead of downloading. Afterwards it took a little bit of work to get video games on Steam working again. However, I'm having other issues now related to video and some applications:

    • When I try to watch videos on YouTube in either Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, it's just a black screen.
    • Video calls on the Zoom application are also just a black screen
    • Playing videos with either "Movies & TV", "Photos" or VLC Media player applications are just a black sreen. Audio still works.
      • However, if I put my cursor on the application icon in the task bar, then put my cursor in the application preview, the video is fine. Clicking on the application makes the video black though. This is true for Zoom, videos on my PC, and YouTube on Chrome.
    • In addition the video issues, I am getting pretty constant screen flickers in Microsoft Office Products such as Word (and sometimes in Google Chrome too). Sometimes the whole screen goes black, not just the application.
However, there are a couple of applications that I have no problem using.

    • Watching YouTube videos in the Mozilla Firefox web browser works absolutely fine.
    • Playing video games on Steam (games are installed to my D: Drive) using the NVidia GPU works absolutely fine.
      • These games are listed in Task Manager as using "GPU 0 - 3D." I thought they were listed as using GPU 1 before I reinstalled Windows 10.
    • Using Discord (which is installed to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData) is fine, including watching someone streaming a video game in a Discord audio/video call (the video works fine).
I have tried the following things to fix this, but with no success:

    • Reinstalling Microsoft Office Products to my D: Drive
    • Completely removing Microsoft Office using the Office Scrub Tool and then reinstalling
    • Making sure my Intel GPU driver was up to date, both through Intel Driver Support Assistant & Dell's website
    • Making sure my NVidia GPU driver was up to date, both through the NVidia GeForce Experience App and the NVidia website.
    • Rolling back my Intel and NVidia drivers to a previous version
    • Making sure my BIOS and Chipset were up to date
    • Going into Safe Mode, completely uninstalling the Intel GPU and deleting its driver, then reinstalling
    • Reinstalling Google Chrome to my D: Drive
    • Reinstalling Zoom to my D: Drive
    • Setting Microsoft Word to use my high-performance GPU in both NVidia Control Panel and Graphics Settings
    • Setting Microsoft Word to use my Intel GPU in both NVidia Control Panel and Graphics Settings
    • Setting the Preferred Graphics Processor in NVidia Control Panel to be either: Auto-select, High performance GPU, and Integrated Graphics (none of these options helped)
    • Turning off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
    • Disabling the Intel GPU (this just makes overall computer performance worse)
    • Trying to fix something in the BIOS settings. Going into the BIOS, there were no settings related to Video (which I vaguely remember there being something before I reinstalled the OS), only power management.
I'm completely stumped. I've tried most everything the first few Google search results suggest. Some results suggest it's a driver issue or an application issue, others suggest it might be a BIOS issue. The weird thing is that videos work in one web browser, and playing high demand video games is also fine. I don't get any screen flickering in Firefox either, or other apps like Task Manager or Discord. Please help, and thanks in advance.

    Black Screen

    Hi Tracy,

Thank you for pasting your query in Microsoft Community.

Please follow the below steps to resolve this issue.

We have been seeing black screen issues of several types after upgrading to Windows 10. The main causes observed so far are driver issues, output to unexpected port, and possibly also issues with the Lock Screen app. Please use these steps:

If you see the black screen only after sign-in
and you can see a mouse cursor:

    • While at the black screen, try using CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to start Task Manager.
    • If it becomes visible, try finding LockAppHost.exe on the Details tab and ending the task.
      • If this resolves the black screen, use corruption resolution steps (dism, then sfc), and run the all apps PowerShell command in

        3080495
        .
    • If this does not work, use File, Run new task in Task Manager to start an Administrator CMD window. Use this to create a new administrator user with the following commands (changing “<password>” to something of the customer’s choosing):

      net user test <password> /add

      net localgroup Administrators test /add
    • This will give you a test user to try, which will confirm if the issue is user or system-specific.
If you see the black screen or have a flickering screen before sign-in:

    • Try connecting to different video outputs on the PC. Sometimes a change in driver can cause the video to be sent:
      • To a different Adapter: from integrated graphics to a discrete card or vice versa.
      • To a different output: from HDMI to DVI, DisplayPort to VGA, or any other combination.
    • Try to boot into Safe Mode with Networking or Enable low-resolution video.
      • Advanced boot options, Safe Mode with Networking, or Low Resolution Video
      • Check Device Manager and look for Display Adapters
        • If you see 2 items under Display Adapters, disable to integrated video card (e.g. Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon HD 4200) and restart. (try vice versa if it does not work)
        • If you see 1 item under Display Adapters, rollback the driver or uninstall the display adapter in Device Manager, and enable the option to delete driver software.
Check the PC or display adapter manufacturer’s site for an updated driver.

Hope the information helps to fix the issue, if you have any further queries, feel free to post. We are here to assist you.

    Regards,
