Windows 10: My hard disk periodically has massive response time lag

Hi there.Periodically - but increasingly often - my Windows 10 PC's hard disks used for storage, not my SSD where the operating system is drift into a state where they have low read/write speeds kilobytes per second and high response times hundreds or thousands of milliseconds. Applications trying to access the disks when they're in this state can get effectively locked while they wait for the disks which normally react in ~10 milliseconds to talk to them.First, I'm assuming that this is a hardware problem rather than a software one, but I'm out of ideas for how to diagnose it properly

External Hard disk contents are not visible.

• Were there any changes made on your computer prior to the issue (e.g., updates, software installation)?
• To make sure that we have not missed on anything, what troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
• Do you hear any clicking sound when connecting your hard disk?

Random lag spikes

We would like to know more about your lag issue:

• What browser are you using when you experience a lag?
• Does the lag occur in a particular game?

In the meantime, we suggest you run the System Maintenance troubleshooter. Here are the steps:

• Press Windows Key + X.
• Click on Control Panel.
• Select Troubleshooting.
• On the left pane, click on View All.
• Click on System Maintenance to run the troubleshooter.
