My Laptop Drive does not have enough space to upgrade to 1709

Have read a couple of articles I found that my laptop a HP Pavilion X2 with only 32 GB drive did not show the upgrade, so using the Windows 10 update assistance I found the issue is I need 8 GB of free space, I have a 32 GB SD card (D drive) that has my data, so that does not clog my C drive.
Having carried out the disk clean up, and remove unnecessary programmes and apps I still do not have enough space.
The laptop originally came with 8.1 lite, but I do not seem to be able to fine 10 lite, so what are my options:
1) Don't upgrade
2) Delete all my programmes and apps and upgrade.
3) Wipe the drive and upgrade

Both 2 & 3 will mean reinstalling programmes, but would a clean install be better, and should I be looking at W10 N?

Thanks in anticipation for some creative thinking.

:)

2. Windows 10 Update & Space Issues

This answer does not answer the question about space. 2 of my 3 laptops do not have enough space to upgrade to windows 10. It says we can connect an external drive, but will it always need that external drive or is it just needed to do the upgrade?

Space in hard drive

I have 3 laptops with 32GB hard drives. These hard drives are soldered in and not able to be changed. After spending a lot of time and trying a lot of tricks including uninstalling all programs not part of the laptop's operating system (e.g. leave manufacturers
screen optimising program etc) I found that the 1709 feature update would JUST have space to install. On the 3rd laptop it won't install because there is not enough space even after all my efforts. My conclusion 32gb is not enough space for Windows 10 to upgrade
smoothly. An ingenious user may be able to squeeze upgrades through. Microsoft should stop leading users up the garden path with a view that a 32gb computer is a practical Windows 10 proposition.

Hi, just a thought- if your device is already running Win 10 (and it seems the X2 can run it/has been supplied with it- would you actually gain anything by upgrading? There are a number of small quirks and oddities reported by some people- see the forum threads for 1709- I would suggest even if it's feasible to update yours, it's worth waiting a couple of months until the first major update comes out.

Note Windows.old will be created and automatically deleted after 10 days - about as big as your existing Windows folder.

Also note MS tries to delay offering Win 10 builds to PCs where there may be a risk. (And phases the roll-out over a couple of months or more anyway).

Make sure the OS is compressed. That will buy you a couple of GB free space. In a command prompt (Admin), and maybe in a powershell (admin) run:

compact /compactos:always

If the OS was not compacted, it will take a while to finish.

Many thanks, good idea, but I thought I would NavyLCDR's idea a go.

Carried out the compact, and at first it said it would take 22 hours, in the end it took 1 hr 45 mins and gained about 6 GB.

P.S. after typing this out, I clicked solved, and lost my post as I had not actually posted the response more LFE!!

7. Try to cleanup more space using the below method:

How to Enable Hidden Options in Windows’ Disk Cleanup Tool

Disk Cleanup Ready Made Short Cut

1) Run Command Prompt as Admin
2) Copy/Paste the following command in the CMD Window:
Code: cleanmgr /sageset:65535 /sagerun:65535
3) The Disk Clean Up tool will now launch with extra options, select all the categories you want to clean then press the OK Button
** If you want to run Disk Cleanup this way regularly, you can also create a shortcut. Just right-click on your Desktop (or any folder where you want to save the shortcut) and choose New > Shortcut. In the Create Shortcut window, paste (or type) the following text into the “Type the location of the item” box and then click Next.
Code: %SystemRoot%\System32\cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535&Cleanmgr /sagerun:65535
Give your shortcut a meaningful name and then click Finish
