Windows 10: My laptop is always go to bitlocker recovery when i turn on, and before the star menu...

BitLocker Recovery Account issue

Hello,

I have a coworker who after rebooting their laptop, received a blue screen showing a BitLocker Recovery window, where its prompting the user to enter a recovery key in order to access their laptop. This is the first encounter I have seen asking for bitlocker recovery for a user, as we never had an issue where if it did lockout a user, it never asked for a bitlocker recovery key.

We then checked the url: My Account to see if their was a bitlocker recovery key.

Their was no key to use. (attached screenshot)

So we are not sure how to proceed from here. We had another IT user tried various alternatives such as rebooting, attempting to safe mode with no luck.

Asking here for any suggestions on what to do, as this is our first experience on bitlocker recovery.

 

Unwanted BitLocker Recovery

Hi, thanks for reaching out! Sorry about the frustration encountered, please allow me to assist you.

Depending on your device and Windows edition, you can turn off Device Encrpytion or BitLocker accordingly. This will effectively disable BitLocker and you should no longer be prompted for a recovery key.

For Windows 10 Home, you can try the steps from this support page, and choose to Turn off Device Encryption instead.

For Windows Pro, search for "Manage BitLocker" from Start Menu, enter or click the Manage BitLocker icon in the list. Choose the option "Turn off BitLocker".

Please note that it will take time for BitLocker to turn off. You should wait and not force the computer to reboot during the process.

We understand your concern as you are getting BitLocker recovery key prompt, every time you turned on the laptop. We appreciate your effort in troubleshooting the issue.



Ideally, in Windows 10 BitLocker doesn’t come by default. It could be possible that the BitLocker got enabled during some updates, either Windows update or PC manufacturer update.



As you have mentioned that you are forced to input the BitLocker recovery key, which is incredibly a tedious process.



Meanwhile, we would suggest you to disable the secure boot from the BIOS and check if you are able to bypass the BitLocker. Please refer the steps in this article:
