  1. My laptop is freezing once it's disconnected to an external monitor

Hi,I have an issue on my 6 weeks old HP Omen Gaming Laptop. Most of the time I have two different monitors connected to the laptop and everything works just fine anyway as soon as I dissconnect the monitors the screen on my Laptop freezes. I have talked to the reseller and they have made a stress test which it got through and we have also checked for updates, Malware, uptaded the graphic card, changed the graphic card settings and nothing is working. Does anyone here explored the same issue and is there anyone who knows how to fix it? I only use the computer to play online poker and once I hav

  2. Windows 10 Laptop Screen partially freezes when re-opened several minutes after disconnecting from external display

We're having an issue that is being experienced on 3 different laptops running Windows 10 (all Lenovo Thinkpad's, but different models), where the screen
partially freezes/or glitches after being disconnected from external monitor. The only way to get it to work properly again is to restart the computer.

    Description of behavior:

    • When we disconnect the laptop from an external display and open the laptop (or reconnect to external display)
several minutes or hours later a
portion of the screen cannot be interacted with as if it froze. A mouse is undetected in that portion, but is usable everywhere else.
    • It seems to be always some portion of the right side that freezes. If an application was open on that portion, the size of the unusable part I believe typically matches the size of the active application that
was there before disconnecting from the external display.
    • To describe the frozen state:
      • Example: Excel file at full screen. When behavior starts, you can't operate anything on the right side of the file (i.e. closing the file using the x, etc). If you try to move the window it's almost like the right side is just a screenshot that always
stays on top. Everything moves behind it.
    • Behavior has been replicated when external monitor is connected via Thunderbolt 3 and USB cable. Behavior also replicated with Single and Dual external display set-ups.

The only thing that seems to prevent the behavior is:

    • Immediately upon disconnecting the laptop from the external display, open laptop and let it "re-adjust" to the internal display. So far, the laptop on which this workaround was tried hasn't experienced the behavior.

Does anyone know what's causing this issue and how to resolve it without the workaround above?

    Thank you!

Primary monitor blacks out after disconnecting from external

    Hi Oscar,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community forums.

    • Are you aware of any changes that happened on the computer prior to this issue?

This issue could be due to the display setting corruption that only affected the primary display when disconnected from the secondary.

I suggest you to try the steps listed below and check if it works for you:

    • Press ‘Win + R’ keys on the keyboard together to open the Run dialog box and type the following into the Run box:
      appwiz.cpl
    • Uninstall Intel HD Graphics Drivers and exit
      Programs and Features.
    • Right click the Windows icon on the taskbar and choose
      Device Manager
      .
    • Expand Display Adapters and right click on
      Intel HD Graphics Display Driver.
    • Click on Uninstall and check the box
Delete the driver software for this device.

    • With the external monitor connected, reboot the machine.
    • Once the machine boots into the desktop, disconnect the external monitor and check if the issue persists.

    Hope it helps.

    Regards,

My laptop is freezing once it's disconnected to an external monitor

connection problems External Monitor for laptop

If you're trying to use a wired external monitor is it connected to the laptop's HDMI output connector or the mini DisplayPort connector?

If you're using a wired external monitor and don't see any output, right-click on an empty spot on the Desktop and select Screen Resolution -> Detect

In addition, you may need to press the F7 key and select the mode in which the display will function. There are 4 modes:

    • Disconnect (or Computer only): display only on the laptop's screen
    • Duplicate: the same display on the laptop's screen and the external monitor
    • Extend: extends the output so that you can drag things from one screen to the other
    • Projector only (or Second Screen Only): displays only on the external monitor

Or are you trying to use wireless (Wi-Di or Miracast)?
