Windows 10: My laptop screen turns off then back on after the log-in screen

Hi! I reinstalled windows the day before yesterday and since then every time I turn my laptop on after entering my password the screen turns off for like 2 seconds then turns back on. This have never happened to me before. I tried putting my old windows back via Macrium Reflect and I even tried reinstalling it again but neither of those things helped. I have an Acer Aspire V3-572g laptop. Any idea what caused this and how could I fix it? Thanks in advance!

I would like my computer to get locked after 5 minutes of no use. Surprisingly I can't find out how to set it.

It turns off the screen, but does not lock the computer.

So for example, if the screen is set to turn off after 5 min, and the computer is set to sleep after 10 minutes, after 6 minutes you can continue using the laptop without having to log in.

 

During calls my phones screen turns off then on then off then on... i cant even press end call or any digits...

Ok Pete... where is this proximity sensor?

 

Hi, as you quite reasonably expect, shouldn't normally happen. That does happen e.g. after changing language, and for rather longer, but only the once, but I can't imagine that's relevant here.

Does it happen in safe mode?
If not, try a clean boot, and if that's ok, process of elimination.

Were any of your install attempts a clean install rather than an upgrade? If so and it still happens then you could try the version of your graphics driver used in Win 8 (but note Win 10/MS will quickly replace it unless you take precautions- see Tutorials)

 

Aight, so it doesn't happen in safe mode, however, if I do a clean boot it does. All of the installs were clean installs.

 

Hi, can you have a look in Device Manager (e.g. Windows Key + X, Control Panel, Device Manager) and confirm
a. there are no yellow exclamations
b. that the driver appears correctly installed for your graphics card
c. that there's no reference to a MS basic display adapter

All my drivers are up-to-date, so is my graphics driver and there is no basic display adapter.

 

Ok, that's good.. can I check something.. when you restored your disk image, did your laptop boot up with no black screen after logon - I realise I made an assumption when I read that before- i.e. does the black screen ONLY appear with Win 10 installed?

If so, I suggest you try the Win 8 driver with Win 10. If not, that suggests a hardware issue... i.e. the laptop behaves differently with the disk image restored.

Have you checked the Acer forums too for any reports specific to your laptop?

 

I've been using windows 10 since it came out. The image I restored had windows 10 installed as well. I've just tried deleting my driver and installing the 8.1 driver but the same thing happens with that one too. The thing is, this screen restart after log-on doesn't slow the computer down in any way it's just annoying coz it shouldn't happen. I looked on the acer forums as well but didn't find anything, gonna try making a thread there too.

 

Did the black screen appear when you restored your Win 10 image too?
And initially using Win 10 did it not appear?
If when you previously used Win 10 it didn't appear, but now it does that suggests either a difference in Win 10 build or driver update.

 

Yes, it does still happen if I restore an image from before.
No, it didn't happen until I reinstalled windows on january 4th.

 

Ok, so has there been any change in your hardware configuration.. anything attached.. a second display..?

 

One more thing that may be interesting. I'm not sure if this happened before, because I wasn't paying attention, but since I have this screen going black issue whenever I turn the laptop on after the boot screen, where the dots go around in circle I get that screen again but the dots now go around with less FPS a.k.a it's lagging. And again, not sure if this was happening before, wasn't paying attention.

 

Nop, everything the same as before. Not even a new mouse, headset, anything.

 

Sorry, no more ideas - sorry I missed this one. As you've tried restoring an image and have made no hardware change, the only other thing I can think of is either some small hardware problem or as soon as you boot Windows, an update is applied.

So for example, if you restored your image but left the internet disconnected, you might find the problem gone.
Therefore you could try uninstalling relevant the Windows update(s), and reboot with the internet disconnected.

Clearly no one else has thought of anything.. and there are plenty of better informed more experienced people here...
