Windows 10: my laptop's refresh rate and my external monitor's dont line up.

i connected my external monitor to my laptop and when i was adjusting the settings i change the external's monitors refresh rate to 144hz, but my laptops refresh rate is 60hz. so now everytime i plug in the hdmi cable it results in none of the screens showing up. when i unplug the hdmi cable the laptop's screen shows up just fine.how can i change my monitor's refresh rate back to 60hz without seeing anything on screen?

External monitor greyed out after changing refresh rate

I modified the refresh rate for an external monitor connected via HDMI from a W11 laptop, and as a result the monitor is no longer available to Extend or Duplicate my display. I can still use the monitor perfectly fine when selecting "Show only on 2" but it will not extend and when checking the display adapter properties when using it on it's own it lists the refresh rate as 60Hz. When I attempt to select "extend" or "duplicate" for the monitor it simply defaults back to "show only on 1". When it defaults back to "show only on 1" the external monitor is greyed out, as are all settings for this monitor.

I am thinking when "extend this display" is selected it is defaulting to the settings last used on this mode, which is the higher and clearly unsupported refresh rate and as such it greys out all the monitor options, stopping me from resolving the issue. Is there anyway to hard reset the monitor settings for an external display so the laptop reacts as if added for the 1st time? or really any other solution.

I have tried disconnecting and restarting the system, updating drivers, removing the monitor from the device manager and reconnecting, updating monitor drivers.

Windows not letting me put my monitor refresh rate up higher than 119.9

To address the issue of your GF63 laptop not achieving higher than 119.9Hz when connected via HDMI to your Scepter Y27 monitor that supports 144/165Hz at 1440p, even with a new HDMI 2.0 cable that supports higher refresh rates, follow these steps to troubleshoot the issue on Windows 11:

Check Graphics Card Settings

• NVIDIA Control Panel: Right-click on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel. Go to Change resolution under the Display section. Here, check if you can select a higher refresh rate for your external monitor. Also, under Set up G-SYNC, ensure that it is enabled for your monitor if it supports G-SYNC.
  
• Intel Graphics Settings: If your laptop uses Intel Integrated Graphics for the external display output, open Intel Graphics Command Center or Intel Graphics Control Panel and check the display settings for options to increase the refresh rate.
  

Windows Display Settings

• Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings. Scroll down and click on Advanced display settings. Here, select your external monitor and see if you can choose a higher refresh rate from the dropdown menu.
  

Monitor Settings

• Check the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) settings to ensure it’s configured to operate at its maximum refresh rate. Some monitors require you to manually select the preferred mode for higher refresh rates.
  

Check HDMI Port Version

• Ensure that the HDMI port on your laptop is HDMI 2.0 or above. While your cable supports HDMI 2.0, the port on the laptop must also support HDMI 2.0 (or higher) to achieve higher refresh rates at 1440p. If the laptop's port is an older HDMI version, it may not support higher refresh rates.
  

Update Graphics Drivers

• Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date. Visit the NVIDIA or Intel website (depending on your GPU) and download the latest drivers. For NVIDIA, you can also use the GeForce Experience app to update the drivers.
  

Try a Different Connection Method

• If your laptop and monitor support it, try using a DisplayPort connection instead of HDMI. DisplayPort often supports higher refresh rates and resolutions compared to HDMI.
  

Test with Another Monitor or Cable

• Although you've already tried a new cable, if possible, test with another monitor or cable to rule out the possibility of a defective component.
  

Consult Manufacturer Support

• If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it may be helpful to consult the support resources for your laptop and monitor. There may be a known issue or firmware update that can resolve the problem.

Refresh rate Problem

Screen refresh rate is the rate at which the data displayed on screen is refreshed; it may be an image or some text document. Most of the users would like to set it to a higher rate but this also depends on the capacity of graphic
card and monitors. If the refresh rate is slow, the images on the display looks as flickering to the user eye and makes it uncomfortable to work.

Nowadays the latest monitors available in market will have minimum 60 Hz of refresh rate and it is very good option to set it to 70 Hz if you your monitor is compatible. Normally a high performance or quality monitors can reach
120 Hz of refresh rate. So I would suggest you to set your monitor refresh rate as higher as possible, below given steps describes how to access this feature on your Windows 8.1/10 PC.

• The default refresh rate setting is 60 Hertz (HZ); however, your monitor may support a higher setting. Check your manufacturer's documentation for information about the settings that your monitor supports.
• If you use a higher refresh rate, you can reduce the rate that your screen flickers; however, if you specify a refresh rate that is too high for your monitor, your screen may become unusable and your hardware may be damaged.
• Changes to the refresh rate affect all users that log on to the computer.

I would, as of now, suggest you to visit the computer manufacturer's support website and install the latest display and chipset drivers available for the latest operating system (currently it would be 8.1 in the list).
