Windows is on my (Samsung 970 EVO Plus) SSD. Today I got a new (Seagate BarraCuda ST4000DM004) internal hard drive.

Whenever I boot with the new drive's SATA data cable plugged in, the motherboard (X570 Aorus elite) evidently tries to boot into the new drive, yielding this error screen:

Reboot and select proper boot device

Or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device

What's worse, the keyboard stops working, so I can't enter BIOS settings while it's plugged in.

So, after reading that hot swapping SATA data is fine, I unplugged the SATA cable, booted Windows, and then plugged the new drive in, and set it up. Everything went fine. When I entered BIOS from the Windows Troubleshooting menu, though, and checked boot settings, the SSD wasn't showing up--the new drive was the only option. Sure enough, restarting gave that same "Reboot and select proper boot device" issue.

Surely there's a solution that doesn't involve having to unplug the new HDD every time I turn on my computer? Thanks for your time.

Need help installing a new hard drive

yes, so just unplug the old hard drive and install windows onto the new drive, it being the only drive plugged into the computer.
then after windows is installed and it works, plug the old one back in and it will be recognized. obviously turn the computer off while plugging in/out drives.

you only had to go to computer management if you needed to see the drive in windows, if you want to install a fresh install of windows to the drive and then use both afterward (recommended) then this will do it.

if , by chance, it boots the old windows instead of the new after doing that - then just go into the bios and arrange the drives in your boot priority, putting the new drive first.

How to install Windows on new Internal Hard Drive?

I bought an Alienware x51 R2 about 8 years ago and the internal hard drive died yesterday. I didn't have any back up data saved and can't recover anything from the old internal hard drive since its dead and broken. Which is no big deal for me since I didn't
really have any important documents in there. So I ordered a new internal hard drive to install next week. My concern is how do I install Windows OS again for the new internal hard drive? The Alienware desktop came with Windows 7 OS already installed, it didn't
come with a Windows CD, and a few years ago I took the offer to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, so I originally had Windows 7 for a few years and switched over to Windows 10.

If the computer already came with Windows 7 OS installed, would that mean when I boot the new internal hard drive it will automatically prompt to setup Windows 7 OS, or would I need to have the Windows 7 Installation Media in a USB?

If my Windows 7 product key got upgraded to Windows 10, should I be installing Windows 7 or Windows 10 on the new internal hard drive?

The Alienware desktop did come with the product key for a Windows 7 on a sticker. Can I reuse that product key to install Windows 7 OS or do I need something called a "recovery key"? If I do need the recovery key, where can i find it?

I am not trying to copy an old hard drive data into a new one, I am planning on installing the hard drive and start fresh.

    Installing new internal hard drive

I have connected an additional 4th internal hard drive. I an using Windows 10. The drive is not being recognized, probably because it is not initialized, etc. yet. My question is what are the steps in windows 10 to accomplish this?
