Windows 10: My PC freezes every time the disk usage hits 100% while downloading large files.

Hi, I discovered this problem a few days after the first startup of my PC. On my PC with freshly installed Windows 10 Pro, I tried to download a game from Xbox Game Pass that is 130GB. The download had reached 12%, and upon checking Task Manager, I noticed that the disk usage 512GB SSD Disk 0 C: was starting to reach 100%. From that point on, the disk stayed almost always at 100%, and after a few minutes, the PC froze. I couldn't interact with anything; the mouse and keyboard were unresponsive. I reinstalled the NVIDIA driver from the link you provided, while also following the clean boot steps. I'm afraid this hasn't helped.

The powershell commands reported that everything is just fine.

Again, my disk usage is not simply at 100%. When it reaches 100%, my entire system freezes - I can't do anything with the pc except kill it and boot again. I only see this when playing games; transferring files works just fine (tested with 50GB files, also moved games around from one disk to another, everything went perfectly).

There's also the fact that PUBG is installed on my hard drive and CS:GO is installed on my SSD. It doesn't matter which game I try to run, whether on the SSD or HDD, the SSD (system disk) usage goes up to 100% while the HDD drops to 0%. Also, the transfer rate and speed all drop to 0KB/s.

Is there anything else I could try and do?

 

Laptop freezes when disk usage shoots to 100% frequently

This problem has been going on for several months now and I am increasingly frustrated by it and desperate for a permanent solution. It comes and goes for approximately a month at a time, then seems to self-resolve. I am currently experiencing the issue at the moment.

Essentially, the screen freezes when I am working on my laptop. For example, if I type something, the words stop appearing. The freeze lasts for roughly 30-60 seconds each time. After each freeze, all keypresses / clicks are performed. Things work as normal for roughly 5 minutes, before the next freeze appears again.

Since it first started I've kept Task Manager open to observe what happens whenever the freezes happen. So far, the only consistent indicator is that my disk usage shoots to 100% then the freeze occurs. Shortly after the disk usage drops again to 0% or 1%, and things are back to normal again.

I am very puzzled as to the underlying cause, as since the very beginning when this happened, I have not done anything differently. Yet, this seems to come and go each time despite not particularly changing anything.

Things I have tried so far:

• SFC scannow and DISM checks - almost every website I've read suggest this as the first solution and I have tried this every time my laptop enters this freeze phase. This always come back as having found nothing
  
• Windows Defender scans - I have done both full scans as well as the offline scans. All did not identify any threats
  
• DSKCHK - done with nothing found
  
• Malware scan with Malwarebytes - 0 detections
  
• Windows Memory Diagnostics - no errors found
  
• I have reduced startup apps to the bare minimum required
  
• I have also looked through my apps and deleted / uninstalled any that I no longer require
  
• I have opened Device Manager and updated all possible device drivers
  
• I have disabled SysMain
  

Other observations, not sure if relevant or not:

• The CPU is constantly <5% throughout (freeze or no freeze) and memory is typically around 60% throughout as well
  
• There are also no audible whirring or clicking noises coming from within the laptop
  
• Whenever disk usage hits 100% there is no obvious 'process' (in Task Manager) that is causing this. All processes say '0.1 MB/s' despite overall usage being at 100%.
  
• Because I leave Task Manager pinned open, I can constantly see the disk usage graph under 'Performance'. Most times when the screen freezes, the graphs still update and I can see the usage changing in real-time. There have been times where even the graph freezes, so it looks like a sharp increase followed by a sharp decrease (rather than a plateau at 100% in between)
  
• When a freeze lasts longer than a minute, sometimes the clock doesn't update as well until the freeze is over
  
• Even when my laptop is not in a freeze phase, it occasionally has issues waking from sleep when it is unplugged. The screen doesn't light up (but the fan seems to start running), so I end up forcing a shut down and restarting it. This almost never occurs when I connect it to power, so I normally leave my laptop plugged in and running.
  

This constant freezing is very disruptive and I would be very appreciative to anyone who is able to suggest anything else I can try to hopefully resolve this.

 

Every time a program has high disk usage, System starts using 100% disk and freezes up PC

As title says. Every time something else uses a lot of disk, task manager shows my System using 100% of my SSD even though it only shows as around 0.1MB/s. While instlaling a game, the install will over 300+MB/s and not hit 100%, but this happens for around 5-10 seconds before my System kicks in and uses 100% with low MB/s and forces the install to stop entirely, also freezing up my PC. It can take 5 minutes to stop.

This also happens sometimes while I’m playing a high usage game, or running high usage programs, but not as consistently as an install. I’ve tried every article and solution I can find for 100% disk usage and to help stop system, but nothing has worked. Any advice?
