    "Letters and numbers are all correct, but most of the other signs are misplaced"

    This suggests to me that you are using the wrong "keyboard language" for your keyboard, and that therefore you first step would be to determine exactly what language keyboard you have. Possibly have a look at Windows Keyboard Layouts - Globalization | Microsoft Docs.

    (The age of any laptop capable of running Windows 10 at all should not be a problem as regards keyboard layout)

    Hi David, no I had made no hardware or software changes. Let me clarify: this is not a BSOD.

    In following the instructions to run Defender offline from the settings screen it gets to a

    "choose your keyboard layout" from which the user is to select keyboard like "us". At this point all

    means of selection...keyboard and mouse are disabled, so the keyboard layout can not be selected

    thereby hanging the system until you power off the system. I have run the Defender offline CD, but it also

    will not execute on boot, but goes directly to normal windows login screen. The minidump is not triggered

    because it is not a BSOD, so no help there.

    Let me know if there is anything else I can try to bypass that "choose keyboard....." screen

    WD offline scan- Computer restarts and a "Choose keyboard layout" screen appears

    When I run an offline window defender scan, my computer restarts and a choose keyboard layout screen appears and that's all it does.
