  1. My PC thinks it's running Windows To Go because I used my boot drive externally on another PC

Pretty much as the title says, but I'll add in a bit more detail here for those that like a good story.

So here's the context: I had to go away recently and wasn't able to take my main PC with me, so I instead took my laptop and PCs boot drive because the drive had a few important files I needed on it (CV etc.)
I get to where I was going to be for a few days, and boot my laptop.
I get to the login and realize that the laptop is still running Arch Linux from when I was using it at college a few months back.

Luckily I had my 2.5" to USB adapter with me, so I used my PCs drive to boot my laptop, download a Windows ISO and install Windows 10 to the laptop (without formatting or adding partitions my PCs boot drive My PC thinks it's running Windows To Go because I used my boot drive externally on another PC :D)

Now I'm back home my poor PC thinks that the internal boot drive I used to boot my laptop externally is still external, even though I'm looking at it being connected to its internal SATA III port as I type this.

So my question is what the solution might be to this?
I'm not afraid of registry tweaks and can find my way around Windows easily, I've just read that some solutions involving registry tweaks sometimes only remove the problem until certain USBs are plugged back in, which with the problem cause being my boot drive, i'm afraid might just happen whenever I boot my PC.

    :)

  2. not enough room on pc. can i use external drive?

    Hi Julian,

During installation of any updates, the desktop component files are in a compressed format (such as the .zip compressed format) and will require extra space to uncompress. An external hard drive may not be the best option for this. To isolate your concern,
we'd like to ask the following:

    • What specific update are you trying to install?
    • How many disk space is left on your PC?
In addition, a screenshot of your Disk Management will help us provide the appropriate troubleshooting steps. To get the Disk Management data, follow the steps listed below:

    • Press Windows key + X then choose Run.
    • Type diskmgmt.msc on the Run dialog box then click
      OK.
We look forward to your response.

  3. Need help with connecting external pc to used for raid storage

Basically I want to set up raid in a separate pc to be used only for the hard drives.

But I don't know how I would best connect this raid setup into my computer.
    • Do I use a NIC card to gigabit over multiple channels?
    • Or perhaps a really long sata III cable?
    • I don't want to connect it over the network. I just want to directly connect it.
    Goals:
    • Access data quick
    • Keep hard drives external to PC
    • Ease of use
    • Keep costs down (hence DIY PC instead of prebuilt NAS)
    • Expandability (hence DIY PC instead of prebuilt NAS)
    How do I do this?

    See this illustration.

not enough room on pc. can i use external drive?

    Hi,

Please answer these questions to assist you better.

    • When you say 'not enough room on pc' are you referring to install Windows updates or are you trying to upgrade to Windows 10?
    • What the make and model of your computer?

I suggest you to move your files folders and documents to an external drive so that you can make space in your PC to install updates. You may also refer the link below and perform Disk clean up to free up more space in hard drive.
