  2. Issue with Laptop turning off after applying new thermal paste

    Good Afternoon,

I decided to clean out my laptop of dust and install new thermal paste after several years of use. I've done this before with other PCs and laptops with no issue. I was able to reboot fine, then after about 10 minutes the laptop just turned off randomly.
I was concerned, but upon turning the device back on I've run into my issues.

    • The laptop will go to the Windows login screen and stay there with the custom background I picked. If I hit 'ctrl alt del' to get to where I enter the password, the password begins typing itself slowly one character at a time. My keyboard doesn't work at
this point, I can't click backspace or if I hit a key nothing registers. After it types 4-5 characters the device shuts off
    • I can't get into BIOS for the machine, as it will turn off either before BIOS loads or right as the BIOS comes up
    • I get to the startup repair, however the device powers off when I go to start it where it asks for the account's password

I thought I may have mis-installed the cooler/fan and the thermal paste, however I've cleaned it now 3 different times and even bought new thermal paste (in case the prior tube was old/expired), but still no luck. Is this a software issue? I am not sure
if the device is broken or if it's a software issue. My thought is something is affecting the fan/heat sensor forcing the device to shut down, but I am not seeing anything on the board which looks fried/broken.

Also, the fan does spin up when it turns on.

PC not booting after applying thermal paste

I exactly don't know what was the problem. Here is what I did-
I removed the fan and came to know that I have applied too much paste so I cleared all the paste on top and from heatsink.
When I was fixing the heatsink on CPU before, the heatsink was not fitting currectly other locks were getting automatically removed and hetsink tilted when I was trying to lock the pins. So I fitted all the lock forcefully all the way in.

But this time I didn't did that.
I applied pie size thermal paste and fitted the heatsink balanced it on CPU to make sure it is not tilted and turned the knobs to lock it.

So now my PC is running normally.
I checked the temp with hwmonitor and it was 43-52C idle.
But when I used the prime95 version 2.85 small test the temp skyrocketed to 100C, I freaked out and quickly shut down my pc.
I didn't know it would force it this much.

I guess I will still need to buy new CPU fan.

First time placing a thermal paste.

Agreed. Looks like the OP was looking for better temps with AS5 and applied:

    • The cooler wrong
    • and/or Tim wrong
Now the thread takes a turn Jester.
