Windows 10: My phone number is verified. Why does Microsoft continue to ask me to add it???

My phone number is verified on my Microsoft account.Why does Microsoft continue to ask me to add it again???Then when I try to add my phone number, I am advised that the number is already verified???

No need to verify. My number is more important than mails i receive. Canada dont allow service providers to sell phone numbers list anyway.

My Microsoft profile phone number

When I logged into Microsoft it asked whether to send a code to my email address or to my phone. The phone number is not my current phone. I have seen multiple postings asking the same question. "How do I change the phone number associated with my account",
but I have yet to see an answer.

Can someone provide a straightforward list of steps to do this?
