    i had a retail windows key. but when i changed my system. there is error in activation. what should i do right now. i did not remove my key from my previous system. thanks in advance.

    Upgrading a PC and Retail Keys

    My current desktop PC started life with a Windows 8 Pro retail key and now has the latest version of Windows 10 activated by a digital key linked to my MS account.

    I want to change the motherboard, CPU, memory & system drive with a clean install so I guess Windows 10 will not automatically activate. What are the essential steps to deactivate the key currently in use and ensure it activates using the new hardware?

    Hi Van, thanks for the reply

    This is where I am confused. How many different "editions" are there? I had a digital retail copy and I am presumably buying a boxed copy. Are these different editions? Or is an edition "retail" "OEM" so all retail product numbers will work with all retail versions?

    1) Will the product key from this work on my current install?

    2) if not can I do a repair install using the new one and will this then allow the new product key?

    The retail version clearly in this case does not allow me to activate on a new motherboard. It should and it says "retail channel" when I type slmgr -dli . I really don't understand why this worked perfectly on my previous motherboard and not on the new one

    Window 10 Pro Retail bad motherboard using new motherboard

    I am using fresh windows 10 Pro Retail version on a system where its motherboard was bad it worked long enough to install and update windows then crashed and never recovered properly. I am getting a new motherboard to replace defective - all other parts
    are the same (incld. hard drive where windows installed). Will I be able to activate that windows as normal? or will it think I still have the other motherboard if so how to deactivate it for new one?
