Windows 10: My SD Card Reader will not mount except following a cold boot

My DELL Win11 PC hung up on 'reboot' so I hard-rebooted pressed on/off button 10+ seconds Ever since, when I put in a good! SD CARD into my reader, it fails to recognize it. If I leave the SD CARD in the reader slot, and reboot, half the time the SD drive is recognized from a cold boot. I then re-mapped the SD Card to a new letter S If I eject the SD CARD and then re-insert it, no SD Card Reader is recognized. I have tried EVERYTHING and all has failed: - I removed and reinstalled Realtech PCIE CardReader ... - 1 hour+ with a skilled DELL technician, no success: - Tech reinsta

Boot from SD card Reader?


It likely depends on what the BIOS thinks the device is? If it shows up like a USB thumb drive it should work. If it requires drivers to even be detected it won't.
I know I wish I could boot from the built in SD Card reader in my laptop but the BIOS does not even see it. It's not listed as a boot option even with a bootable SD card in it.

Thanks guys. It looks like it basically comes down to what the BIOS thinks of the card reader, and if it even sees it.

That's basically one of the questions there... since the machine has a card reader built in, can they boot from an SD card?

As stated, it just comes down to what the BIOS thinks and does.
