Windows 10: My sign-in password is incorrect and I dont have security questions set in.

Can someone please tell me what to do? I tried putting a password/pin on my laptop. I saw the pin option which said I needed to have a password first, I put in a password same as my microsoft account password that I use to log in. When I got to the pin option I needed to put that password in and when I did, it said the password is incorrect... My laptop hasnt been locked since then cause I fear not being able to unlock it. Does anyone know a way to reset the laptop password without security questions since i never got an option to fill those in, and now when i try it also requiers the current

About your concern with typing the password after being idle, it is actually recommended to activate for security reasons.

If you wish to disable it, I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

• Go to Settings.
• Click on Accounts.
• Click on Sign in options.
• On the right side, you will see required sign in.
• Change it to Never.

How to create a new app password

To create a new app password for an app or device, take the following steps. You can repeat these steps to create an app password for as many apps or devices as you need.

1. Go to the Security basics page and sign in to your Microsoft account.
2. Select More security options.
3. Under App passwords, select Create a new app password. A new app password is generated and appears on your screen.
4. Enter this app password where you would enter your normal Microsoft account password in the application.

Note: Once you have created and entered an app password for a given app or device, you usually won't need to do it again.

Which when I click takes me here, I dont want to setup 2 step authentication, that sounds like I have to type in a code from my phone everytime I log in.

Ok, I got it working using last set of clearer instructions.

 

Changing sign-in password clue

Thanks James. The system allowed me to change my security questions without changing my password, but not to change my password hint without changing my password, but it did easily allow me to change my password to the same password and then select a new hint. The reason I was reticent about changing my password is that the sign-in screen gives me this option after having mis-typed my password, but when I click on it I get the message "This feature requires removable media such as a USB flash drive. Please connect a USB flash drive and then try again."
