Windows 10: My system fails when doing "Feature Update For W10 Version 1703".

My system fails when doing "Feature Update For W10 Version 1703".
It says "You can't install windows on a USB Flash Drive During Setup".
I am not trying to instally on a Flash Drive. I had an external harddrive and a printer in USB ports, but removed both and still get this message.
Googling I found that a registry setting should be 1 rather than 0, but when I checked mine was 1. All my updates prior to 6/1 and been fine.
What to do? Thanks.

It means that it's waiting for approval from your operator and it has nothing to do with Nokia.

You could call your operator and ask about this approval, someone in technical service may know that how long it takes to approve the newest firmware. (For some reason, every operator has to approve the firmware updates and only after that their clients
can do the update)

Hi, if I understand you correctly, and please correct me if I'm wrong, your current build is the Anniversary Update (1607) and either you are
- receiving the Creator's Update by Windows Update or
or
- manually updating Windows to the Creator's Update using an iso or bootable Win 10 medium.

(Which of those?)

The automatic update failed, so I tried doing it manually, but that failed also.
It was trying to do the "Feature update for W10 version 1703".

My build is 14393. That is the only thing I am able to find; I don't know where the version is.

The Disk thing is attached.

 

Hi, I believe you have probably tried this fix:

Please post a screenshot like that just to confirm that setting.

It is odd that you have two recovery partitions, and the 30Gb one is much smaller than any recovery partition should be.
Normally the EFI partition is about 100Mb.

Important precautionary defensive step before upgrading
Create a disk imageAll regular contributors here recommend disk imaging. Some people have significant problems when upgrading. Creating a disk image lets you recover
- if your PC is unbootable
- your disk fails
- your PC is infected with ransomware
so it's something we recommend using routinely.

E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage for image sets (e.g. 2x the size of the data you are backing up)
- option Backup, Windows Backup

Then:

Following the idea in part 3 of the link in my first post, shrink C: by about, say, 700Mb to leave 700Mb of unallocated space.

Then try upgrading again.

 

Several years ago I had a similar problem with too many recovery and reserve partitions. I can't remember all the details (too old !) but I couldn't do anything until I removed those extra partitions and Aomei Partition Assistant was the only app that could remove them. I solved the problem by removing all of the recovery partitions and the machine has been working flawlessly ever since. .... just an FYI

 

Below are the two things you wanted to see. I am pretty sure the partitions have always looked like that, as I wondered what they all were, but didn't dare change anything.

 

Hi, here's how I interpret 3 of your partitions:

EFI: (normally 100Mb) 260Mb (Active & Boot)
System Reserved (typically 16mb): 128Mb
C: 433Gb

which leaves the Recovery partition.
Now I would expect this to be 450Mb, and it's NTFS. So that appears to be your 1000Mb partition.

I have no idea what the other two are. Perhaps another Lenovo owner may know. Nor do I know why your partitions are the size they are.

Anyway, what you can do, and this should be perfectly safe, is use the partition manager to shrink C: by, let's say, 1200Mb, given the size of your Recovery partition, and try upgrading.

If that works, great.

 

To get a bit more information:
Open an admin command prompt.

Type Reagentc /info
This will give sthg like this:




Now we need to know which that partition is.

Type
Diskpart
List Disk
from that identify the disk number n corresponding to your system disk
Select Disk n
List Partition

This should give sthg like this:




You can clearly see Partition 5 is the active recovery partition.

 

I rebooted and tried it, but it didn't help. Maybe I should also unplug it. (no, I'm not that clueless)

The thought here is that once we know which Recovery partition is not in use, if the idea below doesn't help, delete the unused Recovery partition and try again.

I'm not sure what this means - the upgrade? Running those two commands is just getting info - they change nothing.

My suggestion (above #7) was:

If this still fails, time to look at the log files.

 

I feel foolish admitting this, but...
I checked my laptop, on which this update installed, and it doesn't even have the registry entry I mentioned.
I misread the stuff I about changing the registry from 0 to 1. It is actually 1 to 0.
Changing it from 1 to 0 makes it run fine.
